  • Reno/Air Race History QuestionR

Have there ever been, to anyone's knowledge, any amputee's as race pilots in any class at Reno? I know Mike Pinketh lost his hands after winning in '93 but don't think he ever went back as a race pilot although he did go on to fly airshow aerobatics.

An inquiring mind wants to know.....

    Thanks!

I believe Gene Akers who raced Corsair #22 years ago had an artificial leg.

I can't remember his name, but there WAS a one-armed F-1 pilot many years ago.

Something in my memory says Robert Mitchem was missing a limb too.

And then there were at least three pilots (Frank Sanders, Wally McDonnell, and Pat Palmer) who had one eye.

A man named Robert Jones (I think) raced very successfully in both IF1 and in Biplanes with one arm...

Yes, Neal. Robert Jones is the IF1 racer I was thinking of.
