They ran some paid campaigns for a pretty long time I think. I remember seeing them pretty often. (The advertisements next to your news feed, etc..) If only we all had that kind of budget!

I can't speak as to whether they ran a paid campaign in the past, but a quick look shows they post a cool picture nearly every day. Each of those pics is getting 400-1000 likes and a few hundred shares. Do that religiously for a year and you can get some monster numbers.
