I think wood really has the potential to go beyond 500 mph.
The engines are running a prop of their own...thus very reliable system.

"The airspeed record in 1939 stood at 469 mph, set by a German Messerschmitt."
I think the replica is using smaller lighter engines so will not be designed for max. speed.

Yes, there are many articles written with such notions. But the airplane was designed for the 1935-1936 Coupe races. During that period the races were flown by the 1935 winning Caudron that won the 1936 Thompson Trophy in Los Angeles and the prototype Me-109V-series airplanes that were going 280 mph during the, essentially, cross country races.
The 1939 3km records were flown by airplanes that were designed for speeds that the Bugatti could never attain. A quick look at the section of it's wing will tell one that it was a much earlier design. The Heinkel and Me-209R records were set with engines with more than twice the power of the combined capability of the duo Bugatti King naturally aspirated engines.
The fascinating thing about the Bugatti is that it was a "lost" design for decades, it was found under the best of barn find circumstances and lore, and that it has never flown. From that it's late 30's vintage has caused many article writers to confuse the performance capabilities of the airplane of the late 30's, as well as it chronology. The airplane was never built to set the 3km speed record, it was meant to win over the other European entries in the Coupe races.
