I'm not a pilot, so I may not understand the amount of distractions there could be in a commercial cockpit.

However it seems that there would be a basic procedure in any cockpit to "look both ways" before crossing any runway??

I almost had the same thing almost happen to me in San Luis years ago. I was crossing the runway before the control tower was opened early am with a low 200 foot ifr overcast morning after announcing my intentions (not just once, but 3 times) to cross the runway over the local CTAF frequency to be met only with silence on the other end. As I was halfway across the runway, guess what pops out of the fog on short and final ... a Embaer Brasilia commuter either not monitoring the freq or choosing not to let anybody know that he was on final for the airport. Scared the stuffing out of me to say the least.
