The attitude was about the same on some landings. The flaps did not operate, and it has the big wing to fuse fairings.
(NO matter how many times Mike O'Leary writes a caption that says so, it wasn't primer yellow. It had been painted in 1970 in this cool scheme with real paint. Yellow and blue with 1/2 inch red pin stripes.)

For the record, it WAS primer yellow in 1969. But the '70-'71 paint scheme was the yellow and blue scheme. Not to nit pick, but I THINK they were orange pin stripes. BellcobraIV would know....but I don't know how often he comes around here anymore.

True, in '69 it was primer.
          The pin stripes were red.

              Re: Name that Bearcat

As far as the Gary's old P-38 goes, I was there when it happened. They had to do an engine run, Crew member hops in the cockpit and is just getting the bird fired up and the gear handle was in the up position, so as the hydraulic pressure started to rise the main retracted and down she came. They broke the boom and mashed the yell out of the gear doors and of course the prop and engine were screwed up as well. John happen to be there that year do to signing on a purchase deal with Al Reddick on buying the old Lear Fan T-33 chase plane, along with checking on the restoration of his South African Air Force F-86. I was not standing there when John went up to Gary and said how much? But the Rumor is: he said a certain dollar amount between all the swearing, kicking, screaming and John said will you take a check? Gary said “deal” and after the race that year the P-38 was towed down CIA now Aviation Classics and they began doing the repair work to her. They did fly that airplane out of Reno down to El Paso, so as far as having Spar damage that must have happened after she got down south. It was airworthy the day it left Stead for Texas.
