I apologize for my ignorance here. (I was only at Stead a few partial days this year)..
But why so modest?

Not every lap is an attempt at a speed record. The pilots are trying to win the race, and have to finish to be able to do that. In the Bronze and Silver races there really wasn't any need to do anything other than stay ahead of the other planes to move up. In the Gold it becomes a choice between trying to run down the first place or making sure you finish in the money. Winning is a long term investment in time and effort and wear on equipment. "You have to finish to win" is a credo for many.
