  • question to the race course

I remember on previous Bear's homepage (history) something was written about "... as evidenced by the lower winning speeds since 1995."

What does this mean? The effect of any changes of the course's layout?
Were there made other changes after 2011?

    thx

Re: question to the race course

There were many changes made to the course after 2011. Its smaller, tighter, the deadlines are closer, there is an altitude restriction. In many ways then have taken a safe course and made it more unsafe than it was to start with.

Actually, the course has been growing steadily smaller since the 80's. There was a major course correction in the late 90's as I recall that took a big bite off the backside and moved the far pylons from up on the hill to down in the valley. That shortened the course by about a half mile. And then after the Ghost accident it was tightened up even further.

Are the planes really traveling faster or does their "calculation" and the "optimum path" say so? The course is smaller so logic tells me it is slower, but I'm not a pilot or engineer, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

            The calculation changed in 2003.

It's faster, because it's more optimized.

Explain please. Seems counter-intuitive. If the planes are pulling a constant 3 G's around the course, how can that make them faster? Shorter course, shorter laps times...maybe, but I don't know that is true either. Has anyone done a 500 lap on the new course yet?

No Holiday Inn Express here either...

Essentially, the smoother flow of the post'11 course, allows less airspeed bleed-off. There is pretty constant g's, true.

Let's get one of the UL drivers in here, to explain better...
