A great air show

I've photographed a lot of air shows over the years, but this remains one of the very best I've ever seen. The lineup included 22 Mustangs, 2 P-38s, 2 Corsairs, a P-63 and two Centaurus Sea Furies. There were 5 days of flying, with flying happening all day. There were photo passes by B-17, B-29 and A-26. Aerobatics by Art Scholl and by Frank Sanders in his lovely Sea Fury, along with startling JU-52 demos each day.

It was all quite something to behold...

It was if you went to your local municipal airport and said "Hey....let's have an air race here". Miami Homestead was and is not the kind of airport that screams Unlimited race. It was only a 7 mile course, so it would be like running on the sport class course at Reno today. Not a lot of ramp space. One road coming in and out of the place. And no other racing classes aside from the Unlimiteds.

But...when you have a huge sum of money that you're trying to "spend", you offer a huge purse and people show up.

It surely was a great time for everybody who participated, though. I've covered a LOT of Races over the years, and I cannot recall any where people seemed to be having such a good time.
