We noticed the same black smoke trail when they came down the shoot as well. Sign the engine wasn't just right. Also a great learning experience for the lad to trail for a change. Any explanation on the smoke entrails??

Looks can be deceiving. There were numerous things changed that were not tried and true. Some of them are new; never before tried. The scoop system was not a direct copy.

I'm sure the oil pumping didn't help things and it's being looked at.

Frothing (too much air)?
Excess oil pressure?
Inadequate cooling?
Over cooling?

I noticed the 'smoke' trail too - looked like the Bear running rich! They were working on the carburetor on friday, so I wondered if they mixture was different, but looking at some of my pictures it looked like Voodoo was running a lot more spray bar water than Strega was (the reverse of last year) and that seemed to be the cause of the trail, rather than the exhaust. Makes me wonder if more water was needed with the new scoop, though I didn't hear any mention of that from the crew.

I didn't notice a lot of oil on the plane, except out of the radiator outlet, so I guess that's where the breather goes. Blowing by the rings would tend to push oil out the breather. I read somewhere that Dago Red had significant blow-by, but why that's a change for Voodoo is probably what they're looking at (if that's the cause.)

(Come to think of it a lot of water would wash oil out the back, too.. )

Take a look at the oil streaks on Rare Bear's prop after the gold final. I'm betting it came from Voodoo.

Following the race on Sunday, Voodoo had a lot of oil where it didn't belong.

You don't burn or crack a picton on Monday and keep racing until Sunday. From what I heard it was just a weak ring package. That pressurizes the case and starts throwing oil out the breather.

Considering the engine problems Voodoo was having this year makes it look all the more impressive for Team V - the superior acceleration it seemed to have early in the Saturday and Sunday races over Strega. According to Hoot's story in AC, it sounded like their engine was running good and he was pushing it pretty hard to stay in front, but Voodoo looked like it had a lot more speed on less HP until I assume Stevo had to back off the power.

Agreed. It was impressive to see Stevo out front after rounding 6 on the pace lap Saturday.
