Damnit man! I just looked at my schedule and I have that weekend off. I still have family in the Sacramento area and this might be a great reason to go home for the weekend. Now, if I could convince the wife...

If you visit the San Francisco Bay Area and have the time, be sure to visit the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier Museum in Alameda. You can easily spend 4-6 hours on the tours and walking around it.

The most visual way to enter San Francisco is on the Ferry from another city like Alameda, Oakland. You'll pass by Container Ships unloading at the Port of Oakland, go under the San Francisco Bay Bridge, to the Ferry Building, then to Pier 39 - 41/Fishermans Wharf/Aquatic Park/Crissy Field area.

      Ferry Schedule here: http://sanfranciscobayferry.com/

Bring bikes if you have them and you can get around a lot faster than driving for short distances. Bikes are allowed on the Ferry, Bart, Buses.

From Aquatic Park, (which is 1/2 mile west of Fishermans Wharf) to the Marina Green, Crissy Field to the Golden Gate Bridge (about 5 miles west of Fishermans Wharf), or be on the Ferry crossing the bay from Pier 39/41 to Sausalito, but you'll only see part of the show since the Ferry moves so fast. Alcatraz Island is in the center of the bay, that would be a good place also, but that cost an extra $50 to get on. A boat moving slowly or anchored between Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge is a good place. The USS Jeremiah O'Brien, a liberty ship docked at Fishermans Wharf, goes out Saturday and Sunday for $170 per person. Looks like they are serving free beer, donuts and a hot dog too!!! Drink beer, eat food, see the Blue Angels, ride on the USS Jeremiah O'Brien, see the San Francisco skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz from the water... What a deal.

Avoid Pier 39 due to large crowds and somewhat restricted views. It's best to be able to see 180 degrees east to west.

Bring your bicycle and you can move around quickly.

We have viewed Fleet Week from all angles. Lived in the Bay Area for many years. Treasure Island is an awesome stop to see a lot of activity. From the Sea to the Air it is a great way to see all the action!

The center of the air show is at the Marina Green area. That is where they are selling the premium seating areas. Treasure Island is about 4 miles from that area. Much of the air show is overhead in the sky, so you can see it from farther away, but closer is generally better. If you have a 180 degree view east to west, you can see when the Blue Angels do their high speed low passes. Otherwise they sneak in and you see them only at the last moment. Some of the high speed passes come from the South, heading North. You rarely see them coming due to the hills and high rise buildings blocking the view and they have a tendency to scare you because they are low, fast and make a lot noise.

About 1 week before the show, the local paper, the San Francisco Chronicle, SFGate.com writes a positive story about Fleet Week. The comments are fun to read because many people are complaining about the noise and crowds.

About 10-15 years ago, I was on the Flight Deck of the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier Museum and after the Blue Angels show, they made a slow speed, low altitude, formation pass over the flight deck as though they were making a tribute to the Hornet. I think they were landing at the Oakland Airport at that time.

Here is an article from the San Francisco Chronicle with 86 pictures and comments of where to view the Air Show from. Keep in mind show center is the Marina Green, an area about 3-4 miles East of the Golden Gate Bridge. The best viewing is around that area within 1-2 miles away. Once you get more than 2-3 miles away, the air show is small specs in the sky leaving a smoke trail. Most of the air show is overhead, but one part of it is in the water.

I think the Blue Angels flew today as I could hear their noise from the East Bay and nothing around here makes that kind of noise like the Blue Angels.
