Re: Any word on Precious Metal yet??

Someone mentioned that it would take a week to take the wings off and another week to put them back on with a full crew. Just watched that great video and it only took 48 seconds!

Maybe you have not heard about this

NBC Sports is slated to air a one-hour special on the National Championship Air Races in February of 2016.

The Precious Metal fire and returning it to home base would make a great part of their one hour special. NBC has money so they pay for video and access to it. It might be worth $5,000-10,000 and Precious Metal needs the money.

      Does it make sense now?

Engine and prop will be removed first.

          This is one entertaining thread...

Here's what's going to happen; the team will start recovery this weekend. We had to get not only personnel together, but also the necessary pieces and parts for disassembly and proper transportation of such a valuable and fragile load.

Everything will be documented. We will be posting progress over the weekend on the fan page. Maybe here as well.

A P-51 is easily taken apart with a telescoping forklift (or small crane) once you have the proper jigs. We will remove the engine, prop, tail feathers and control surfaces before trucking (NOT AIR-LIFTING) her to Kissimmee. Once she's cleaned up the NDI (non destructive inspection) will begin. Once we have a clear idea what the damage is, we'll assess the different possibilities and options for repair. But one step at a time people... This is not going to happen by magic, it will take a lot of hard work and for us, some serious funds.

We still don't know what caused it and depending on the extent of the fire damage, we may never know. We'll see. I'd love to know what happened. (I have heard that the internet knows what happened, however...)

We have no idea if it's feasible to bring her back next year. Ask us in August 2016. But we are sure gonna try!

          Hope that helps.

And please keep up the banter, you're hilarious!

I don't think you understand how things work. Sponsors had to foot the bill for the special. NBC isn't paying RARA for the special.
What brings money to RARA is people who actually buy tickets to attend the races.

I'm the original poster, and thanks Thom for answering my question. Not sure how it got into airlifting PM etc etc LOL. I thought it would be easiest to get Scotty to "beam it up" and then to home.
Best of luck with the project and like many, I hope she's not hurt to badly.

Having worked with the '96 Olympics and NBC at the time, I think you misunderstand how it works. NBC pays for the rights to broadcast an event. This means they would be paying the group that owns the rights, or in this case RARA. Then they approach sponsors and sell them advertising, based on the projected audience. They take the risk in making a profit in the situation. That also comes with a usually restrictive contract laying out who can record the event in any fashion. At Reno, this was an extremely liberal process compared to most events. I have no doubt that they paid a nice chunk of change for these rights. It may also include payment by implied value of advertising the event. It's the standard business model for how things like this work......

That applies ONLY to major events like the Olympics, NFL, NBA, etc. Smaller events have to pay the networks to be broadcast. There is no way that NBC is going to pay RARA. If you read the fine print at the bottom of the RARA press release you will see the list of companies and people that put up the money to make it happen.

No, unfortunately it's the other way around for something as limited in scope as the air races. RARA had to pay for the privilege of having it filmed and broadcast, and then RARA gets to go out and sell the advertising time on NBC for that time slot. This is what we had to do for many years in the Unlimited Hydroplanes...and ultimately even that sport couldn't afford to do it. It sucks for smaller, niche sports.

Are you saying that RARA would sell commercial time to whomever would be willing to pay the highest fees? And this would be the commercials we would see during the 1 hour show? So who would be willing to pay for it? Airplane Insurance Companies, Airplane Manufacturers like Cessna, Beechcraft, Property Developers with homes on airports?

That's great news, saw the truck on the facebook page, nice truck.

Now let's get back to helicopter sling loading damaged airplanes and having NBC TV covering it with the various sponsors either buying or selling time.
