Electric Air Racer - Design Project

Hello everyone,

I'm the team leader for a university design project with the aim of designing an electric air racer that could compete in a Red Bull style air race. The project is a collaboration between teams from Loughborough University and Virginia Tech.

We're currently in the research and initial concept phase of our work and are seeking to gain a better understanding of the characteristics which would make a great air racer. We've created a short survey, link below, that we would really appreciate responses to. Don't feel obliged to answer every questions, any response is helpful.

I hope you have a thick skin asking about "red bull style" air racing on this forum... This can be a tough room ;-)

Sounds like an excellent project -- is this a design study or are there plans to build and fly?

I would suggest you contact Pauli Iscold who is Professor at University in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He is involved with Red Bull and FAI aviation world records. His input would valuable.

Thank you for your feedback and input. The 'red bull style format' definitely doesn't appear to cater the the same market as the Reno Air races. We have the scope to suggest changes to the Red Bull events so it's interesting to think about what inspiration we can take from the Reno races.

We're taking this project through from initiation to full detailed design. Unfortunately we're not going onto the actual build.

I will have a look into contacting Professor Iscold. He's certainly got a wealth of experience in this area.

That is really cool.

I also notissed that late Paul McCready's design was able to reach 30 000 m/100 000 ft using a solar power, but even more interesting was that it flew 7 times faster in the thin air than on sea level.

Wouldn't a sleek aerodynamically perfect lifting fuselage ( solar electic hybrid ) going 135 km/h on sea level able at 100 000 ft to fly at 945 kmh/ 587 mph ( just a notch faster than Skip Holm with Tsunami ).
