Looks to me like Taichi got the scoop and doghouse wrong. The one in his depiction looks more like the one that eventually went on after Z put the airplane into the cornfield. In the late 70s it had this metal scoop adapted for the airplane by Frank Sanders.
First time I've ever noted an error in one of Taichi's artworks. I love what he does, and hope he and his lovely daughter are doing well these days.
So do I! His stuff will always be an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of Air Racing. He is also a very nice man in person. I was honored to meet him one year when he and his daughter attended the races.
