My information on the 'City of Bellingham'/'My Wife' sponsorship on the side of the plane came from C.E. Crosby himself while sitting around one afternoon at Floathaven on Lake Whatcom. So while the white may have been to cover the registration, the lettering ON the white is spot on.

I in no way meant to disparage the good Doctor. His 'sponsorship story' is a great part of Reno legend.
I was just offering some further background on the history of the airplane and why there was a sponsorship area 'available'.

Back in the day when you had to have photo film specially developed, I had several photo lab tech's ask me why there were often "telephone poles" in the way of my pics..

On shots like that, did the camera capture the focus of the plane before the pylon and stay locked in, or did you have a preset manual focus for the plane?
