  • TSUNAMI

I wanted to post a reply to the other thread but it has gotten long and the subject has been changed from TSUNAMI to photo
    credits and piracy.
I wold love to see TSUNAMI rebuilt or restored.
Even if its not raced. Some feel that crashed airplanes that have killed someone should be smelted and burried, never to be seen or heard from again. I disagree ,and feel there is no better tribute to our deceased friends than to keep thier dreams alive.
As anyone involved in aviation for most of thier life I have had several friends killed in airplanes, and I know every one of them would have wanted the airplane rebuilt and flown.

Make a clone....fine......Even call it Tsunami-2, but Tsunami itself is gone......Let her rest......

I WOULD like to see a whole fleet of Tsunami-like homebuilts on the track someday (hint hint).

There's something about a pumped-up Merlin in a plane 2/3's the size of a Mustang that stirs my primal instincts (think "427 Shelby Cobra" for an automotive equivalent)

It's a Moment in Time to Cherish

Those of us who were lucky enough to see Tsunami develop in the '80s and really move in the early '90s, realized that it was as one of a kind as her owner, JR.

The chances of another home-built like that bird to appear will be as slim as having another JR evolve within the ranks of the unlimited air race teams. Many of the key players in the development of Tsunami are either out of racing or no longer alive -sadly enough.

However, there's nothing wrong in dreaming about it.

This has been discussed on earlier forums here. Tsunami-like Merlin powered racer ( traditional tractor layout without guns ) is very appealing and also expensive. Also pusher designs are being developed at least on a drawing board.

With the help of specialised forum comments and lots of time I did come up with a plane that has something new added to that "ancient" concept.

Biggest problem is funding and the lack of good spare engines ( to make several new homebuilt racers ).

Now and then I have done several enhancements on it..usually because people who saw it said something which I figured were worth while to be thought over.

Materials could be metal and wood + some new fibres in some areas...not too much new since the vibrations in a "sick" Merlin could be devastating. Next I'd like to do a big enough model of it.

Well AirDOGGe you are not alone with your dream.

Tsunami was destroyed, so there would be no such thing as "rebuilding", It would have to be cloning it from the ground up,like the Hughes Racer or any of Bill Turner's masterful creations, or the 262s. What was horrible was calling Fighter Rebuilders the day of the crash to ask when JRS was coming out to fly the Bearcat, only to learn he'd just been killed.

              Re: TSUNAMI

I recall someone of the racerpilots said:
" ONE THING I TAKE SERIOUSLY; YOU CAN GET SERIOUSLY KILLED ! " Could have been ex-Tsunami pilot Steve Hinton.

That doesn't help in the loss of a friend, but at least it is comforting to know that they are aware of the risks lurking when flying these planes.

I wonder if the malfuction of the flaps was done in the early days of Tsunami when the landing gear collapsed while taxiing. That could have caused a stress somewhere in the structure that then affected devastatingly when more stress was added in the structure in time.

Was it Steve Hinton who said:" One thing I take seriously is that you can get seriously killed in this business ! " ?

Always good to remember how dangerous speedflying can be.
