I was there& I still have my 1949 B&W photos. As a teenager i hooked up with Jimmy DeSanto thruout his rapid career from the P38 in which he only had only about 23 minutes of flying it to Cleveland. It all ended for him when his clipped wing Curtis P60E tail came off while I was timing him during practice . Being an ex WW2 jumper saved his live but ended his racing days.
PS. The wrong size bolts for the tail were installed by Curtis.His chute opened at about 150ft.
