  • 2020 Reno Air Races

Ok, the 2020 are not happening, so let's create a virtual "Lets have some fun!" thread to at least keep the memory alive.

For the real deal in 2021 - visit the Reno Air Race website to show support.

The Reno Air Racing Association has been organizing the National Championship Air Races for over 60 years, promoting its storied traditions and pageantry.

Photo brings back some really good memories!

< Email finally back to normal! Turned out, it was a feature, not a glitch... well, technically a feature, caused a glitch LOL... I'd forgotten my actually user account password for the server, which also is the email address that I use, long story short, the external spam filter that I use didn't get the password change and repeated checks with wrong password got the system blacklisted by the server firewall...

Actually pretty neat feature, if you saw all the failed attempts at logging into the server that happen every second of every day... the net truly is "Dodge City 2020!"/end>

PS by edit: Where'd you hear the info???

I don't think that Iskra has been anything but towed for years now.
Not sure on the Bear, when it was being prepped to leave I was told it would be back, but a better source on that crew said it was going to end up in Lewis' museum of his toys.

RARA has just announced that a new class of racers will be added to the 2021 Races. A Piper Cub cross country race will be added. It will be a one lap cross country race around the unlimited course. The race will start Sept 13th with the racers crossing the finish line hopefully on the 15th to kick off the opening ceremonies.
The new class is expected to attract Cubs from all over, with the most distant racer travelling all the way from Elko NV. In an interview with the pilot, he said, he's planning on leaving sometime in June to arrive at Stead early in the week for qualifying.
Stayed tuned for additional info on this new and exciting class.

We have notified Timing and Scoring that this class will be timed using a highly sophisticated and ultra-sensitive 24" Sun Dial. The Sun Dial will be positioned immediately in front of the Box Seats and will also be monitored by a Sony Handycam.

The Handycam CCTV feed will be streamed live via two cans and a string and can be viewed on any Sony Beta machine or for purchase after Race Week on Laser Disc. Pilots will be furnished with food and beverages as well as Adult Depends for use during the race. Volunteers are being sought to work as additional ground crew in cleaning the aircraft upon their return to the pits. No experience required.

Because the pandemic has created a lot of uncertainty of what pilots/teams are able to attend, the unlimited class will be experimenting this year with allowing turbo prop powered aircraft into its field. Entrants include Texan IIs, (Super) Tucanos, and PC-21s with limited support from suppliers Beechcraft, Embraer, and Pilatus.

Funny, this thread is all silly. I was serious. New motor. Fits into the regs but is just as fast.

Years ago at an automobile slalom event at the Santa Ynez Airport, a beautifully dressed couple in a pre war Rolls were in line to run. When they got to the front, she got out of the car with a sun dial and handed it to timing/scoring, advising them to use it. They proceeded to gently cruise around the course. Fan favorite.

In t5he 70's we used to g tot Sacramento Raceway for the Wednesday and Saturday open drags. A couple of us used to run for bragging rights and to test our fixes for the Friday night, ahem, street drags.
There was an older dude that raced a bone stock VW van. He and what looked like his granddaughter would helmet up and go down the track at around 60 MPH by the quarter. He always got a standing ovation!
