No doubt in my mind that Uncle Bobby is sitting at the Pearly Gates having a rather colorful, unabashed discussion with St. Peter over whether it's a 'Wickerbill" or a "Gurney Flap".

      Re: Bobby Unser

He was a racers, racer. One of only two drivers to win in three decades (Rick Mears). Other numbers are so impressive as to be almost unimaginable.

And I always enjoyed his commentary on ABC during the 500. He called his brothers win and his nephews win. Hard to imagine a motorsport family more involved and more successful.

May he always enjoy the road ahead...

When Lyle was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame Bobby Under was one of the previous inductees that showed the new guys around. He was a great person to visit with and he and Lyle subsequently became good friends. He was kind of blown away with the whole 500 mph fifty feet above the earth.

Yes, I remember that. Eric and Dad and I were there too. Dad was on the MSHF's aviation nominating committee and was one of those responsible for nominating Lyle. It was cool to see him get the recognition and stand among other racing greats. Eric and I had gotten to know George Follmer - the sports car racing inductee that year (1999) - a bit from vintage racing and it was cool chatting with him and Jeff Gordon who was on hand too about air racing.

Harry Miller, famed for his Miller board, dirt track and Indy cars, was the historic (posthumous) inductee. His grand daughter was one of the family there on his behalf... she was very attractive.. and fun... but that's another story.

Eric and I have covered Indy Car on and off for a number of years and still have lots of connections in the paddock. We got to see the Unser family up close - from Bobby and Al Sr. to Jerry and Little Al and Robby on quite a few occasions. Great racers and "big personalities" off track... oh the anecdotes.
