So here you are -- Reno rookie with a hot new Race motor with all the trimmings out to qualify. Suddenly you are back on the runway moving really fast -- tail high, without flaps, little visibility with oil on the windscreen and more than half the runway behind you where it does you no good at all... I've always wondered how he ever got this thing stopped.

The other side was clean -- the oil missed the nose art. Other than some spillover the left side looked just like it did when the confident young rookie taxiied out half an hour earlier.

I think that would have been a Jack Cochran bullet. RR was damaged in 82.

Ah yes...the one photo in all the years I was at Reno that I wish I could have a second shot at...or at least have been shooting at a higher shutter speed on a crappy camera.

Quite literally as I pressed down on the shutter button there was an audible "POW!" over the roar of the engine...just as Dan passed the home pylon to start the race. I was so disappointed when I got my pictures back that it was such a crappy image.

And I'm one of the guys that got to clean-up that mess.
The steam cleaner at the wash area cleaned off the outside pretty good, but when we got it back to the pits and started pulling off the panels we all got slimmed.

I think that would have been a Jack Cochran bullet. RR was damaged in 82.

I was the one that got volunteered to ride with Jack Cochran on the overnight run back to Hollister for the stock engine so Dan could fly home.
And the the Red Baron crashed on sun.
It was a hell'uva week
