  • Graeme Frew new Boeing 787

Graeme Frew posted this on his FB page yesterday.....

So this happened today and you have to wonder about the odds. I was in Amarillo Texas picking up a 787 fresh off repaint to deliver to SFO and when we taxied out I saw this Yak 11 parked on a ramp. So a Reno race pilot in an Air NZ airplane goes past a legendary Reno Air Racing Association racer that is (maybe) being prepped for a tilt at the crown?.I wonder if they need a pilot🤔

It's a museum exhibit. Graeme is probably safer in his own Yak.

Its been sitting there like that for probably 20 years now. Nobody is working on it, and last I heard, the engine was frozen due to being left with all the spark plugs pulled.

That said, apparently with the new tail, it wasn't all that bad to fly. There aren't a lot of potential Unlimited projects left out there to be revived, but this is one of them. Perhaps another of the Sport Class guys will go after it.

Has it ever been advertised for sale?

Not recently, but like most museums, if you came and offered $$$ for a project that will never get the attention it needs, I'd bet they would be willing to sell.

For what its worth, Graeme is looking for a ride in a Yak for next year. He REALLY wants to race again, but he just can't get Full Noise here to do so.

                Yep, that?s her !

This aged highly modified Yak-11 was built-in 1955. She then refitted with a much more powerful engine and was used for air racing from Sep 1988 (c/r N134JK). Unfortunately, an accident happened to her the year after, she crashed at Stead FLD Airport, NV due to a mechanical failure. Time passing to 1998, she was repaired by someone unknown as well as wearing a new c/r: N190JF. After serving for nearly half of a century, she is now resting on the ramp of Texas Air and Space Museum, Amarillo. (Appreciate aerialvisuals.com for documenting this history such carefully). N190JF. Looks a lot like Czec Mate flown by Sherman Smoot?

It is similar, and I think they got the idea from Czech Mate, but went up an engine size from the R2800 to a 3350. The extra weight of the larger engine made it very scary to fly so they added the T33 tail to it and that made it fly better.

Jack had it listed for many years. Never had any takers so he donated it to the museum for the tax write off.

Now here is a bit of Irony... Mark K found these and posted them in the Miss A thread back on June 11th...

And here we are talking about the very same bird in a separate a couple weeks later.
And this pic pops up on FB. (The image will disappear in time when FB moves it and the link is broken.)

Was the vertical stab scratch built?

In the first iteration as Mr Awesome, the vertical stabilizer had added area, but this was shown to be insufficient.

So the second version had a T-33 tail group, including the horizontal parts, added to it.
