As Wayne said, Guardian Angel. Seems like Matt wanted to go all out this year as they had a race engine and race 3-blade. Looks like Clas Thunder is a stock TM this year. Maybe one day we'll have a hot TM survive the week intact.

Too bad they didn't talk to me! Mark and I could have had them up, at least, a vbulletin message board.. in as long as it took for the nameserver changes to propagate (1-4 days) I seriously doubt that their current website or any iteration of it before was hosted on anything but a shared server environment. I hate to remember it but I'm pretty sure they were/are hosted at word press....

    YECH!

In 2011, you could not get through to their site for hours, our dedicated server in a huge big bandwidth datacenter never skipped a beat..

NOT fishing for a job, I'm officially OUT of the web hosting business! I absolutely freaked and was stressed beyond belief when the server I had at the time, which hosted the heritage cup and a couple other websites... Anyway when Texas had the big chill, we were forced to move..

But the downtime forced heritage, at least, to move... Bummer because I'd hosted it from day one..

Oh well... nuff of my personal story LOL

    Re: Qualifying Updates

I posted this originally over in the thread I created for Will's updates, he's getting his tent transformed into a "datacenter" so he can post updates... here's what I posted there

Will is camping out at the field, just gave me a visual report, he could hardly see 395 lights from the shopping center!

He has some updates coming as soon as he gets his tent into the 21 century LOL Has laptop and hopefully hotspot access as soon as he's set up..

I took some notes but I can hardly read them!!

Dusty had a stack fire, should be all is well tomorrow!

Scotty Crandlemire was DQ'd Black Flagged actually for "low and erratic flying" Will has video or photos that show otherwise, I think an appeal is pending..

Thunder Mustang lunched engine on takeoff, barely made the field, big bounce on landing.

OK I'm not doing Will any justice here and with his approval once he gets here, I'll merge the two threads that we've now got going..

The originally had it at 346, and it got knocked down to 330 (and the reports site is really messed up on speed).

Really hoping this gets ironed out. If not, I guess who is fastest will just be decided on the course.
I had him at 329. Sounded great and looked really fast. It was an odd number. Not sure what happened. From pylons 2-5.

Sports were hitting decent rain in the VOS. Speeds obviously down. Dusty had the Yak wound up and he was on a really good line. Weather dragged him down for sure. Really slow conditions. Big lightning strike on the field shut everything down during jet quals and everything was over.

From those of us who couldn't be there - much appreciated
From the updates on the qualifying times to the detailed accounts... makes not being there a lot easier.

    Re: Qualifying Updates

For everyone, they posted all of today's quals at reports.airrace.org. Weather looks like we're done for today.

wadeh, Thanks for the detailed update!

-Glad to hear Shanty Irish isn't too bad.
-It's showing the Yak at 346. A little slower than everyone was assuming.
-The fast Sports were supposed to go up in the second session which is not happening. 39 was supposed to have a whole new cowl with a different exhaust outlet so that might be part of the story.
-The grandstands have been a part of the discussion on social media. They couldn't get the larger grandstands this year so they did what they can. RARA is hoping that the cost of a reserved seats in the large permanent grandstands being the same as a general admission ticket will keep people at ease.
-The class sizes are mostly the same as last year. I'm pretty sure all of them were slated to be larger, but each class had a handful of drops the past few weeks that brought us back to last year's numbers. Sport is down 2 from last year.

I'm out here early this year with a good friend (who is also my son's father-in-law). He's a retired A&P, and knows lots more about engines and airframes than I do. He's also great at starting conversations, where I'm seriously introverted. I'm learning a lot listening to the conversations that he starts.

We were standing at the edge of the ramp when they were trying to start Shanty Irish. They tried for a while to start it, and it almost caught hold a couple of times. Eventually one of the exhaust stacks blew some flames, which didn't concern us too much. When smoke started coming out of the cowl, that was a bigger deal. Some flaming debris ended up on the ground underneath, but we couldn't get a good look at it from out vantage. The fire department was out there pretty quick and got it out. After it had been back in the pits for a while, we stopped by. Apparently, it wasn't badly damaged. They said that they needed to change some hoses, but the wiring wasn't affected. I am hoping to see them back out there tomorrow.

If Rushin' Thunder is the Yak, it looked really good and fast, and sounded even better. We're really looking forward to seeing it race.

We stopped by Big Red in the T6 pits for a while. They were out today, replacing the brakes. When we came back to the campers, it looked like they were done.

We didn't see the fast sport planes fly today. Race 39, 24 and 30 are all near each other in the pits. Race 39 had the cowl of and tools underneath, which seems unusual. I normally see it in the pits all closed up and ready to go. My friend pointed the the cowl was not only not on the airplane, it was nowhere to be seen.

It started raining an hour or so ago, just before we started heading back. As I'm sitting here typing this, we just had a huge crack of thunder from very close by. And a second, farther one just now. So I am guessing that we may be done for the day.

If anyone knows if they post qualifying times anywhere we can get a look, I can stop by a couple of times tomorrow to check. I can hear the calls for the clock on the radio, but I've not heard times over the air.

Beyond that, the layout is fairly different this year. Last year, I think that we were down to 1 general admission grandstand. This year, there is less than that. There are two small stands (combined, they are much smaller than the one last year). They also set up several hundred folding chairs on the ramp in front of where the general grandstands normally go. We don't know what they are for. We asked one of the guys helping set them up, but he didn't know.

Otherwise, the field for most classes seems small this year. I think that there may even be less sport class planes than last year. The STOL drag group has lots of planes (including a couple of tricycle gear 182's), and put on a fun show this morning.

Weather wise, I was in heavy smoke all day Sunday on the drive from Ellensburg to Reno. This morning, most of the smoke had cleared out from around Stead, although it still smelled smoky. More smoke blew in, in the early afternoon. There were clouds off to the southwest all day, and they moved in this afternoon and we now have rain and lightning.

Looks like it's raining. Gold jets are up right now trying to get some times anyway.

Some Unlimiteds took the clock. Shanty Irish backfired and sprayed fuel into the intake on startup per Dusty. Doesn't sound promising. Rushin' Thunder sounds really good and looks fast.

I'll try to get some numbers soon.
