  • Me 109 G-6 in racing colour

Found this link to a site where they have lotsa sideviews.
In the summer of 1949 during the midsommer celebrations there were 4 Mt:s coloured all in different scheme ( A, B, C, D lettersymbols on each plane ). Race was held in Utti AFB.

Here is a link to a black and white photo of the actual happening.

Generally the planes had no symbols...except in the Winter War ( 90 day war in 1940 ) some Fokker DXXI:s had squadron symbols and personal enblems, which were soon erased.

You know, I wonder if there is a word for "graceful" in the German language.

No matter how you look at it, whatever that word might be, it wouldn't apply. That design looks like it got beat with an 'ugly stick' to within an inch of it's life.

Or, as the father of a friend of ours once said upon strapping into a -109 cockpit, "God, what a horrible place to die."

Cramped cockpit not withstanding, it's amazing to me how this airplane (as with some people) does not photograph well. The difference in the look of the airplane in person, versus what you see in a photo is simply stunning.

The Evergreen Museum's -109 was the first I'd ever seen and it was remarkable to me how different and, well, better that it looked in person.

Still pretty much buttugly compaired to many designs of the era but better...

Of note, I've seen a couple shows on TV where they talked with former German aviators and they were not particularly fond of the airplane either. It got the job done but was terribly uncomfortable in the cockpit.

          Ok !

I hear you. Well they say the F-model 109 was the best. I remember when captain Hans "Hasse" Wind was still alive ( 79 victories ) he commented of those bulges here and there...made it even less aerodynamical. He was one of the first Brewster Buffalo aces..once flew a combat mission with only underwear ( or pyjamas ) on him...pretty quick scramble time.

There were some pilots who never got airborne with it..it just out torqued some rookies at take off. K-model was totally beyond the reach of a rookie pilot..wingloading was over the limit anyone desires to fly with.

I also sat in it once..55 cm space for shoulders..it does look somewhat uncozy working environment. Many say its rival He-100 was a lot better aeroplane.

As an R/C model I realized it went pretty easily into a high-speed stall like did the original 109 G. It was more like a flying platform for a 20 mm cannon than a beatifully flying aeroplane..." lean mean killing machine" to sum it up.

Anyway the 150+ 109:s we got from Germans prior to the wast offensive on June 6th 1944 saved Finland from total destruction ( also the German Flugverband Kuhlmey did a good job defending Finland by coming from Estonia to stop the 2000 + strong soviet air attack) . A battle that is not so well known in the history of ( aerial ) warfare.
