    At least 4 pages long, with some pics, mainly about Daryl Greenamyer and J.Sharp.....enjoy...



    One items really caught my eye:

    "Over the years, a few people have tried to create custom-made Unlimited racers to inject speed and excitement into the division. Greenamyer once pitched Cessna a wild idea: He'd fly a dowdy Cessna 210 with a massive 12-cylinder engine. Worried about liability, Cessna declined."

    Anyone ever hear this before? Anymore info on the topic?

    notice that in the article jon sharp mentions how much more aerodynamic his wing is than a lancair legacy 2000, but early in the article it mentions that greenameyer's legacy wings are currently not on the fuse.

    also they called tsunami a mustang, agggh

      I met the guy doing the story last year and he's a great guy. Go easy on them, after all, Air Racing is not exactly the daily grist of PopSci, so any foray into this sport by a mainstream magazine is a good thing... slight inaccuracies and all..

      Even those of us who follow this stuff daily make mistakes when we finally put the keys down and push ahead.. It's got to be really hard for someone who is maybe out there for the first time, doing a bunch of interviews, taking notes and then has no way to really back up the historical factoid parts of their story.. It still gets the word out and maybe brings in more fans... all good stuff..

        Greenamyer's Bearcat was valued at $8,000; new engines and aviation fuel could be had for next to nothing. He chopped off the wingtips, streamlined the cowling, added a huge prop and cooling system, and dramatically reduced the plane's weight. Nobody could touch him. Reno grew slowly into an aviation cult, until the ritual packed in 150,000 fans a year. There is simply nothing like a pack of fighters roaring wingtip to wingtip 30 feet off the ground at 450 mph.
        Well that is the way it should be done also with a new racer...not just modifying a Mustang ? I know this hurts..but Tsunami was not small enough. Compared to Hellcat a Bearcat already was a diminutive version of a regular Navy carrier fighter.

          juke, keep in mind that the hellcat and bearcat were both made for two very different purposes, the hellcat was for longer patrols cruising for 2000 miles, bearcats were made to get in the air quickly and intercept kamikazes
