...funny thing is I was having trouble remembering the year, since we
attended Oshkosh in '82, '84 & '85 but the photo was in with my '85
pictures.
At the time I had no idea of the history of this race plane, but what
stood out was how severely the wings had been clipped, the tiny canopy,
and the non-stock looking prop. Needless to say we went to Reno the very
next year.
This photo of the "Ghost" is from Oshkosh some time in the 1980's, can anyone guess which year?
Here's a picture just as that paint scheme was going on. This was taken Wednesday morning of Reno '84. They'd spent all night putting the 'old' Miss Candace/Jeannie canopy and turtledeck on, as well as replacing the tail from the incident the day before when the 'new' equipment departed the aircraft and tore up the vertical stabilizer. Somewhere I have pictures taken inside the hangar at about 2:00 in the morning as they were thrashing to make the repairs.
By the end of the week they had outlined the race number in yellow, and put Leeward Air Ranch Special on the wingtips.
