Bring back the T-28's or Unlimited Jets with re-heat!!! I'd love to see a replay of the Stoli MiGs and Jimmy Leeward! Even as a WWF-style event it would be awesome.

They would have to hand out earplugs and get approval from the FAA. It would be exciting though.
Didn't someone break the sound barrier at reno one year?

the only rules i would have would be:

        no afterburner
        no supersonic
keep the course tight enough so you can't go supersonic
have 3 classes and allow turbo props

Of course they're dropping the jet class. That way they can have more 'skip-n-flips' for us to watch.

According to their site, the course will be flown at 5000 ft. I am assuming thats agl. So here we are trying to follow Varieze's that are several miles away. Can you say boring. I may not be 100% thrilled with the jets, but at least you get a sense of participation when they go by.

And they had speed. I think I read just over 200 mph for the Rocket Racers. Not very fast for a title of Rocket Racing.
Not to bash the planes but can they safely handle the forces of the rockets?

I will never forget the Stoli Migs and Leward though!

Now we have time for unlimited un-homogulated sport class -- bring back 1930s air racing!!

                    Please no more airshow stuff.

Are they still speaking of running the rok-races a mile about the crowds?

I'd rather watch pokey ultralight races at 100 feet than drive all the way to Reno just to watch air racing on closed-circuit TV. (plus, at 5000 feet AGL, those would be some mighty TALL pylons )

Same here. When I heard "JET races" were coming to Reno permanently, I was expecting at least unlimited gold racer velocities, if not faster. The L-39s provide some fun close racing action, but I have a dire need for speeeeeeed!

                            Additional:

I just ran across an article on this topic at Newscientist.com if anyone is interested:

Rocket Racing League names its first team

The competitors' flights will be staggered for safety and they will use special visors which project a visual display of rings in front of them, through which they have to fly through to see their own lanes in the tracks

Each competitor will receive points for how well they fly – and how well they conserve their four minutes' worth of fuel – in each of the six races. Then, the team that has amassed the most points will win the top prize, which Whitelaw says will be more than $1 million.

Two of the races will take place in Reno, Nevada, and Las Cruces, New Mexico. But the Rocket Racing League is requesting proposals from other cities for the remaining four races. Whitelaw says the league is in talks with a number of other countries – including Singapore, Dubai, France and Australia – about holding the races there, probably beginning in 2009.
                            .

They could handle them the way the Oscar's handle the technical awards:
"The race was performed last week, and the winner was". Then we could get on with real racing.

Re: This Just In - RARA Drops Jet Racing For 2006 - Unconfirmed!!

i realize rocket racing will bring alot of new technology that the rest of the classes can definetly use to race better, namely the visor (think the lines pilots could fly with that kind of technology). but i can't understand this much money going into a form of airracing that won't be nearly as fast as the unlimiteds, or the top end of the sport class that the spectators will only be able to see from a mile away. i mean from what i'm told you could fully sponsor three top end unlimited racers for what one of these cost to operate, and another three for the prize winnings. one can only hope for a good trickle down effect.

btw, does the prospect of rocket racing scare the hell out of anyone besides me?
                                heh heh alriiiight
