  • A decade later (actually 2012) young Steve took a slightly different path. My autofocus worked better too...

Thanks Mark! The photos you and Neil have put up do bring back some memories! I can see the oil residue on the gear door from the oil cooler- the stock units didn't like the oil flow from the 3350. Fixed those problems when we started building our own.

It was a lot of work adapting the spinner from the Aeroproducts to fit the Ham Std. Looking back now, it's obvious that the blade needs a cuff of some sort- might have been a different story with that and some refinement.

        • Were those blades shorter than the Skyraider prop? They look like they might be in Mark's photos, but it's hard to tell.

A Skyraider prop is 14.5 ft diameter- the 6507 blades that were used on Furies with a Ham Std are 13.5 ft in diameter. I'd wager that these were close to the 13.5 ft diameter.

Did a quick image search and the DC-6 profile looks more accurate for this prop. A DC-7 blade has a lot more blade area towards the center of the prop- it probably would have worked better.

Edit: went and looked up DC-6 Type Certificate: Largest diameter Ham Std prop used 6895-8 blades 13' 5-5/16" diameter. Good eye Neil-

                • I did not think I had any Phoenix shots of "Fury" scanned but turned up a couple of Papa Ezell chasing Howard...

Good Stuff Neil, thanks for posting! At least being slow that year made for great shots of both airplanes together!

Any recollection of how it compared with the Aeroproducts regarding performance?

                      • I always did love Howard's Fury. This is from 2008 -- interesting that I was focused on the trailing airplane here.
