  • Unlimiteds at the Valley of Speed - 1999 video

Along with the JD Reed video, I also found this one sitting next to it collecting dust. I don't believe that this video was ever saw public release, but it is a rather well-composed amateur video by Paul Sadler, At Full Power Productions... focusing on the events of Reno 1999 and was taken from the archives of Pylon1.com. Back 20 years ago putting out a 47-minute video wasn't possible. Today, that's different... so enjoy!

Unlimiteds at the Valley of Speed video captures the sights and sounds of the racers, along with a boatload of up-close and personal shots as well as many minutes of footage along the Valley of Speed... it does put you right in the action! Includes close-up footage of the damage to Strega 14:09 after her hard landing, damage incurred by Critical Mass 15:00 due to lost cowling during the race. Interviews include one with Dennis Sanders 23:33 as he talks about the shortened course for Reno 1999, Bill Harvey 18:21 - an air race fan who's been at Reno since 1974 & describes what it was like along AND inside the course along the valley of speed, & a "young" Tom Dwelle 40:18 talking about his racer "Critical Mass" & his emergency that year.

Good stuff. There are a few planes in there that one rarely sees. Maniyak being one of them. (I think its Maniyak...) Lots of Risky Business, and Bad Attitude.

    Very cool video.

A fun video. I have a question for our historian types: When did this couple of miles of the racecourse get the name "The Valley of Speed"? I don't think the phrase ever occured in "Gentlemen", for instance. For years all of us who spent time out there just called it "the fence". But at some point the Valley of Speed thing took over. It was probably something the announcers came up with -- they were good for inane names for things. Does anybody know?

I don't know if it was Sandy Sanders first, but he certainly was the one who made the term popular. Used it all the time when announcing the races.... which he did from the beginning. By the time he was replaced as announcer the term was already popular... so it most definitely occurred during his tenure as the Voice of Reno. May have heard it first mentioned by Frank or one of the boys (coulda been mama Sanders too, she's a smart cookie), whom may have heard it from one of the other pilots. Hard to say, but my bet is on Sandy
