Posts made past 02:30PM 12/30/24 won't be on the new site!

Well, things are going to happen in rapid succession now... I'm going to do a final database backup at 2:30PM CST today. After the vBulletin team gets it - the new site should be operational "with all posts" soon thereafter. Then following a series of checks, and if all goes well, I'll post a link to the new forums here soon.

Thanks for your patience,

      Sherm,
I know the value of your box seat, I promise. I have been a box seat holder for 25 years now and another few years up in the stands.
I'm trying my best to understand just a sliver of the RARA decision making process in this new imposed sanction on the paying spectator, yet I fail to see any rational thought process (as usual). Think I'll have an adult beverage, gather my thoughts and once again, try to make some sort of sence of this new profit center the decision makers are trying to slip in my britches. As we say down south here, "That dog ain't gonna hunt"

        Markj,
You are a valliant RARA commando and thanks for their nebulus interpitation.
I was reading the mission statement for RARA and it refers to perpetuate the event. We'll continue this thread, I'm sure.

          Re: Ticket info.

Not in defense of RARA per se, but I've seen many shows do the same thing over the years. I've seen good shows ruined by stands placed in the only decent viewing area, at extra cost. We've seen the gradual shrinking of the general admisson areas at Reno. The concessions have gotten fancier and pricier (although more varied, which makes little difference to me). Basically pricing out those of us that try to minimize ur expenditure. I've given up and just save more and have fun.
Many years ago I used to sell my shirt designs and art prints at several west coast shows. Reno was always the one I could not afford either the overhead or their cut, or restrictions and talking with a few vendors this past year (as I'd like to start again) it is hard to make a buck there against those costs. BUT I was slowly priced and restricted out of that business as most shows went a similar route, and I could not raise prices high enough to justify it anymore.
Point is that Reno is not unique, just mst visible to us.
My worry here is that the cost of a family outing to the races is getting prohibitive.

            Re: Ticket info.

It is getting very expensive to be there, especially for nuts like me who have to be there for 8 days, and fly to get there. Myself, I buy the cheap general admission tickets just so I can get the event pit pass. I did not spend a single second in the stands last year.

Tickets for the week are not that bad though. Price an NHRA event like the US Nats, where you spend Fri-Mon at Indy. The NHRA tickets are very, very, high priced.

But $100 to have a cooler delivered? That's insane. I'll keep my $5.00 cooler in my rental car trunk, and walk out to each lunch every day. I buy all my food at the gocery store, so I don't have to pay the high vendor prices. Other than race team t-shirts, I have not spent a dime inside the gates the last two years, and I plan to keep it that way.

              Re: Ticket info.

I've done the opposite. I spend a little more and eat a little something there. But I bring water, snacks etc. with me.
I only buy Fri-Sun tickets, we do the arrvals and go out in the afternoons after my co-fan gets out of school everyday since I've lived here, but this year he will be driving so he can meet us. Thursday we watch from the fenceline.
This year may be different. I hav'nt gone from The first Sat. to the last Sun. since 1985, this year I have taken it off and am hoarding everything till then to enjoy myself. The cost may be high, but compared to my brothers costs to follow auto racing, reasonable. and I'd probably pay a lot more if I had to.
More info on NAG would be great as it sounds right up my alley.
I'm really looking forward to it!

                Re: Ticket info.

Careful what is said here, we don't want to give RARA any ideas about how to get deeper in our pockets. BTW...compare a day at the air races to say, eight hours at a movie theater (four movies...$32-$48, more than double that if you have popcorn and a drink).

If RARA thinks they could/should make more money from the concessions, schedule an intermission so the fans can get out of the grandstand for awhile without missing any of the show...(and you think its crowded in front of the 'huts now).

They already have one, it's called the jet races....
                  Just kidding!
But i bet the "rocket races" will act as one.

$100 for the whole time equals the $20 a day I was tipping the "Cooler Racing Team" for delivery and pickup.

I hope they are getting a cut now because I will not be tipping them.

Cooler Racing Team is a fund raiser for a "local charity organization", and they are getting cut way back. Ask them about it. I do not remember the numbers, but more than a 50% cut.

Well, by "cut" I meant that I hope RARA is giving them money because I won't be tipping them in addition to paying the cooler tax.

Hmm. I was joking about costs in the other thread, but I didn't realize they were talking 100 bones plus. That's a lot of money. RARA is playing a supply and demand game. Only problem is, lowering the prices is often a move too late after the crowds have stopped beating a path to your door.

Maybe they know the end is near and are planning to cash in while they can. It's just a matter of time before that beautiful race course becomes a beautiful business park, or housing development.
                            No pixels were harmed, honest.

One of the people in my box just emailed me and raised that as a possibility.

Business park, probably. Houses? Who the heck wants a yard of sand? I'll stick with my nice green grass here in the midwest.
