  • Tunica Off For 2006

Depending on how you look at it, good news and bad news....

Bad news first. There will be no more racing at Tunica...

Good news. We will miss one year of Mid South Air Racing but will gain a stronger overall foothold in the area when the races move to Memphis for 2007! (West Memphis AK actually, just across the Mississippi from Memphis TN)

Here's the text of a letter from Jeff Landers...

    ***BEGIN TEXT***

    Dear Pilots, Crews and Fans.

I want to thank you all personally for your support of our races and air racing in general.

We've secured unprecedented support from national sponsors as well as sponsors in the Memphis area for our event in Tunica for 2006 and seemed to be well on our way for an incredible event. Local suppport in the Tunica area including support from the casinos has been extremely soft. One casino informed us that, "we don't have to be a sponsor, you're going to come here anyway.

With that in mind I find myself in a precarious situation. We want to grow the sport of air racing. However, all the efforts by your crews, our staff and the countless number of volunteers who come from across the country deserve a venue that supports our event and supports the efforts to bring this incredible event to the area.

After several discussions our national sponsors and regional sponsors we have decided to move our efforts from Tunica, Mississippi to a new facility in West Memphis, Arkansas, just five minutes from the heart of Memphis, Tennessee, the home town of Elvis and the Blues. Our sponsors believe in us and they all think it's worth the wait.

With over 1500 hotel rooms within a couple of minutes from the race course and thousands more in the downtown Memphis area there's much more to offer. A day at the races...matched with a night on Beale Street at BB Kings...a stroll on the Mississippi River...all in walking distance of some incredible hotels. It'll be worth the wait.

We are transitioning our efforts to the new venue and will be ready for racing May 31-June 1, 2007.

Yes we could have worked in the races for 2006, however with less than 90 days to make this transition I felt all would be better served to wait and have the event in 2007.

As usual, rumors do fly faster than the unlimiteds.

This has been one of the hardest, yet easiest decisions I've ever made.

    Best to all!

Have you accualy ever been there?

I have, and I can tell you I wont be going back any time soon. Not even for an Air race. Guess I will save for Reno, and hope I can make it this year.

I hope the pilots have (<---- goggles), and a boat load of wax and cleaner.. cuz they gonna need it. Even with that I dont think they will ever get all the bugs off of the air planes.

At least those that drive there, will be able to enjoy cheeper gass prices at the pumps. Last summer gass was going for 2.35 a gal in TN, and just accross the river in AK it was a 1.90 a gal.

Congrats to J.L. for having the cojones to do what had to be done in the interest of the sport.

Memphis (TN) is an awesome town to visit... we went there last year during the Tunica event for dinner... Memphis has flavor!

Hummn... interesting thoughts... I've spoken at length with Jeff about this move and the postponing of the event till next year.. While as a race fan, I'm more than disappointed that I'll not be going to the mid-souuth this year, with all things considered, I think the move/delay will be a good thing.

I'll be talking with Jeff again in the next day or two, for publication... We'll all know more then..

Bugs ey?? Think someone said that about Tunica also... didn't see any, I think the crosswind component was over their structual limit most of the days...

Rgr that.. we went to Beale St. one evening for a bowl of... oh darn.. what do they call that fish chowder stuff down that way??? A bit spicy, REALLY good.. sat in a club that had live music and a sort of "porch" where we were half in the club, half on the sidewalk.. very cool.. Bout sunset, sipping (yea.. sipping...right) draft beers and eating good food.. then a ride on the trolly round the area..

          Good stuff!

THat sort of evening with your better half after the races will getchalaid a lot faster than a night at the machines and tables for sure!

Gonna be interesting to be sure!

Memphis TN isnt so bad. errr... well ok it is better then west memphis AK.

I have a pilot friend that flies for FedEx. that lives in Memphis TN.. been trying to get him to Reno for several years.. This just might do the trick.. heh If I can get him out to the races in AK..lol

I don't mean any disrespect for the races. I was really hopping for Tunica this year.. It is only a long days drive for me from Richmond. But I have NO intrest in returning to West Memphis AK.

I REALLY hope the races are a great success there, and will get the sponcors the sport deservs.

                    Found this on the web...

The best event in Mississippi just flew north. That's says something about air racing. Smart move Landers. I think the venue closer to Memphis will be nice. I bet the city of Memphis will embrace it, I don't think they did because it was too far south in Tunica.

                      Oh the irony!

CLASSIC case of not taking this sport seriously!

I agree that they might well do far better up in Memphis area... As far as I've heard from Jeff so far, the city and some major sponsors are behind the move 1000%... Getting away from the casinos and goin to the blues might just well be the ticket!

Again, an evening or three in Memphis suits MY style just fine thankyou! Very nice folks there, good food, REALLY good music and air racing just over the bridge????!!!!! Can't beat that I think!

                        Re: Tunica Off For 2006

Aw, Crap......... yes, this is a bad news, good news situation. I was REALLY looking forward to Tunica, I had a blast last year and I was so looking forward to rubbing elbows with the pilots and everyone this year. Especially Bob Button, very funny and a nice guy. So, That ruins my travel plans for the year.. bah!

On the good side? West Memphis is a hell of a lot closer, So that'll shave a hour or two off driving from North Arkansas. I think the location will also attract a lot more people, I mean Tunica was almost out in BFE. Though, The Crime in Memphis is worrysome, I'm not so sure about West Memphis but its probably not much better. So my advise? becareful lol.

But, hopefully next year I'll be in good shape, have some money saved up and I can rent a hotel for atleast three days.. I wonder if any of the pilots need a groupie to follow them into the bars? :P

Sounds like the move is a good idea. I don't think there's any way a venue can survive without the support of the local comminity and businesses.

That being said... is Tucson still on for October? Haven't seen any news on that front since the announcement that it was going to be at Marana instead of Ryan Field. The web site that was supposed to go live last November still hasn't.

I spoke to Jeff and he's really working on making sure that the sites he has his races in are a win-win partnership. I think he's going to make sure there is a local buy-in before moving forward on anything. Also I flew over Marana yesterday and it's under alot of construction.

I think the Tunica disappointment with the community has made him rethink all the venues. He wouldn't tell me anything about Virginia, but I heard RARA was pissed that they picked him to develop a race there.
