Re: 2007 Gathering of Mustangs & Legends

I grew up in Columbus (actually Westerville), and learned to fly at Port Columbus. I have been to many airshows at Rickenbacker over the years. It is sad the the Columbus Airport authority never chose to move CMH to Rickenbacker... But thats a Loooong Rant....

    More to the point:

Rickenbacker field is a "remote" location not unlike Stead, except there is a set of parallel runways and thats all. Primarialy used for freight flights it has a small passenger terminal, and ANGB.

The area is growing and has some lodging near by. As for viewing places... that depends on what H.L.S. has done to restrict the field....

I haven't been there recently except to fly to Atlanta on Hooters Air (really! it was the cheapest on short notice). When the Columbus Airshow was there (waaaay back in the day) it was shortly after the Air Force left the joint, so there was a bit of general mayhem, but the flight line was basically a long rope from one end of the ramp to the other.

Somehow I'm sure with all the freight and passenger development that has since gone on there will be much more restricted areas for viewing of the 'Stangs.

Hopefully it will be pretty good.

Off site, well it's surrounded by corn/bean fields. The one road in and out has been widened to multi-lane status, however most of the development is along that route.

As for flying into the place, well, IMHO... Rickenbacker has, or had, the finest runways in the state next to Hopkins. Small planes want the small runway (no center line lighting), and C-5 Galaxys will probably be in and out on the "big" runway...

I once did a half-dozen Touch-and-goes on the "big" runway in a Cherokee 180... Plunked 'er down between the CL lights and the edge of the runway.

If the wind ever blew in CMH from the north or south (it doesn't... ever) you could probably take off a GA place across the "big" runway....

One note to inbound pilots... If you need crosswind practice, go to nearby Bolton field. Its nearly N/S orientation practically guarantees a crosswind every time. (Its one of 2 fields in Ohio I can think of that ONLY has a N/S runway...)

If the weather holds out it should be pretty a pretty good event.

2nd. best steak on the planet is in Columbus, Ohio... Go to "The Top" on Main street in Bexley (a Cols. suburb), about a 30 minute drive from Rickenslacker.

BTW the field is about 30 minutes from the heart of downtown Columbus.
