    Re: Time for New Clothes!

Never got to see Hoover fly unfortunately (apart from on video). Is he involved in anything aviation these days, or is he just retired and enjoying life?

Oh yeah! The mention of warbird aerobatics brought back memories of Mr.Hoover doing his ultra smooooooth rolls etc. in "Ole Yeller" after an unlimited race. He really filled in the "quiet" time after heats in a great way. It would be nice to see someone do it again. If you haven't seen him at work, I'd advise you to get a video. Time to pack the bags again. See you in Reno and best of luck to all the pilots and crews involved.

Wow, is this a long thread!

Well, I publicly said my piece about CY and am a little remorseful having done so. Yeah, CY is an a**h***, but he's OUR a**h***! From what's written in the history books, I'm glad he was on our side. So goes it.

Chris & Wayne, thanks for those kind words. I'd love to be out at Reno. But lately, I've been deeply committed to fly the Heritage program at airshows close to home. Sure do miss visiting on the Reno ramp and Tom Camp's sorry excuse for a couch (that is fun!).

          Re: Time for New Clothes!

Robin Olds is a great dude. A REAL fighter pilot! Also very gracious and willing to share the adventures of is his wild life with you. He also did TONS for the fighter community. He also took great care of those in his charge. He never asked of his men that he was not willing to do himself. Hell, he passed up a promotion to get into Vietnam! And if the rumors are true, Richie was not the only USAF ace to come out of Vietnam. Maybe Olds will write that book he as always talked about.

It seems what started this is that CY kept asking to have the airplane painted in his scheme. Turn the tables and following him around for a couple of years and keep asking him for his autograph and see what response you get. To me, to ask someone to paint the airplane in your scheme is arrogant. (Maybe there was a financial aspect to the deal??)Most would be honored to have a Mustang painted n their scheme. It just seems to be that CY was looking to keep a high profile as his summers grow shorter.

By the way, why did Roush change his scheme?

If CY wants airplane in his colors, why doesnt HE buy one and paint it? All the book sales had to generate some funds...

King, I think your comment about "owning a P-51" was a little misplaced. First off...is it your airplane or one your associated with? If it is yours, it is your perogative to paint it pink with purple polka-dots if you wanted. Some will always wonder why a certain scheme was chosen. The thread drifted bigtime (and I was part of it) and no one personally attacked you. I do not own (or ever will) a P-51 but have flown the airplane and have been associated with the restoration of one. In fact, I was part of a fight to have a certain Mustang remain in certain colors. The owner was on the fence about changing it mid stream and we convinced him not to. We flooded him with info about the man who flew her and was QUITE successful with it. (By the way, he was a bit arrogant too..according to his family. But also very respected for his skill in the air and his commitment to the fight) The airplane remains in his colors and stands as a tribute to a life lived fully but cut tragically short. If you saw the airplane at an airshow, most could not tell me squat about the name on the canopy rail yet he was one of the most successful pilots of WWII. It is unfortunate he remains an unknown to many.

In my worthless opinion, ALL of these airplanes should be flying memorials to the men who flew, maintained, and supported her. Not just one man...

I need CY's phone number, I want one his grandchildren named after me. I mean hell, I have a couple of Air Medals and flew in Iraq....me and about ten thousand other airman.

By the way..I do own an airplane..and the scheme is all jacked up!
