Th only problem with those Victor still-photos is that they just make it look like it's landing or taking off.....Now, if the plane had retracts and the wheels were up.....

            He could STILL be landing.

Do stack fires happen very often? Everyone seemed pretty relaxed there. I have never seen one, and know very little about them.

All a stack fire is is excessive fuel accumulating in the pipes on start-up. It isnt' really dangerous, as long as you keep cranking...it'll essentially blow itself out when the engine catches.

                      Looks cool, though.

Not much risk, really- its just excess fuel dumping out and burning, and there's not much fuel actually there at any given instant in time. If you ever watch stock car racing, they frequently get a similar fire out the side-mounted exhaust pipes when drivers stall the engine (usually after a spin-out or wreck) and since the exhaust plumbing volume is actually quite a bit bigger than on a Merlin or Griffon, the fire will sometimes be taller than the roof of the car and look pretty alarming while the engine is being cranked to re-start it. But it blows out the instant the engine starts, or if the driver quits cranking it will drop back to just a couple inches in height and then burn itself out in 15 or 20 seconds.
