That prop sure doesn't look like a Bearcat prop in the '72 shot! By the way, was that prop stock Bearcat? Whose idea was it, and in what way did it not work out? Interesting also that both Greenamyer's and Shelton's super Bearcats settled on Skyraider blades rather than Bearcat blades...

Answer to question #4, at least partly, she was Race 9 in the years 1985, '86, '88, and '89.

#5: She was race 44 in 1984.

The Bearcat prop was Dave Zeuschel's idea. Miss Candace ran it from 1970 through Miami '73 and then switched back to the Northstar blades. At the same time, Howie Keefe (on Z's advice, I belive) also ran a Bearcat prop on Miss America. The thought was that the F8F prop was a longer, bigger blade than the Mustang prop, and he geared the Merlins differently to run it. But it was a combination that just didn't deliver the speed gain that he had hoped for...so both Mustangs reverted to more normal props by '73.

...ok, was it a Bearcat prop hub fitted to the Merlin? ...or Bearcat blades fitted to the Merlin hub?

Could one run (clipped) P-3 blades on a Merlin? (I think this has been asked before, but I can't remember the answer)

I know that Chuck Lyford, Dwight Thorne, and Dixon Smith had 'intended' on running 4 Electra blades on the Bardahl Special when they had their 'super mods' for the straightaway record....they never got that far, but I think they looked into the feasibility of it.

She flew as Jeannie in 82 also, with Skip Holm. They went thru 3 engines, the final resulting in (or caused by) a runaway prop and Skips spectacular landing on the front runway.
I never could figure why Leeward got to run in 83 after not qualifying.

I think it was the first year the plane was yellow, (85?) that she blew spectacularly over the RV parking lot one evening, making a heck of a mess.
I have the 88 landing on tap. All the runways were busy with maydays and LARS ended up on a dirt road, right in front of the crowd, looking like she was going to stand on her nose. Nice job landing with few options. That was the year I think all but two of the unlimiteds landed with maydays, almost simultaniously.

Thanks, and nice article in Warbird Digest(which I just purchased). The only thing is I think it's the NA-73X, not the NX-73A(I would guess it was a publisher error)? ...Gotta give you a hard time somehow...

What a sound that would have made, judging by the Bears' 3-blade!

I realize 4 would probably be too many for the amount of power available, but I like the wide blades. ...just clip 'em to fit the Mustang and shape the tips a little to reduce high speed drag.

Just think if you had a Griffon powered racer with those wide blades! Massive torque huh?
