    Re: Photos of old racers.

Hey Deepsky, I think that the plane in question is Sherm Cooper's Sea Fury. Sherm's plane had a tiny bubble canopy just like that...

No I'll take that back. Those are definitely Bearcat gear doors. The way the wingtips look , it might be DG and Conquest 1! It's the right color....

Good Lord Reno64, you're a TREASURE trove of this stuff!!!!!

What were you shooting in those days? The quality is quite good. THANKS so much for sharing and helping get everyone in the mood for AIR RACING!!!

          Re: Photos of old racers.

I ued slow speed Kodachrome (equivalent to Kodachrome 25) for static subjects and Ektachrome 100 for flying shots. Since I only had one
camera back then I usually shot a sequence of K25, PlusX b&w, and then the Ektachrome (morning through afternoon). Unfortunately, in those days money was tight and film and processing was costly, I had to make every picture count and couldn't document the races as completely as I would have liked. If only today's digitals were available then!!!

Some photos. Kind of hard to see but left to right, Mr Boland talking to Skip about the rudder trim tab leaving the a/c and bending the upper part of the rudder, angels of okiniwa corsair, b-25 flying the course as viewed from the east side looking west, bearcat race #8 with road atlanta markings on the side of it, and loui the 4th viewed looking to the east on the east side of the course.

"In the picture with the P-51 Chance III, which plane is to the right? Bardahl II is on the left, but I can't make out the other. It's not a P-51, I think it's a Bearcat with race canopy. "??

How about D.G.'s CONQUEST 1 --Definately a Bearcat.

If you look close, it ALMOST looks like he's flying without a helmet. Certainly without the panama hat. The thought of flying a jet fighter TODAY without a helmet is unthinkable....and he's putting it through an aero routine.

He IS! I can try to do a blow up later. But I swear he did fly the whole routine without a helmet. Good observation Brad. I was wondering if someone else would see it.

According to the FAA registry the F-86 is reported sold to the "Thomas P. Stafford museum" of Weatherford, OK. Anyone know more about this museum?

Wasn't Tom Stafford one of the Apollo astronauts?

No, just wondering if the plane is part of a flying museum or what. Judging from the website I take it this is a static museum. Thanks anyway!

Seeing as you guys are so good getting out photos of old racers, would anyone have a shot of Bearcat N148F in its first racing guise. That would be 1966(?) owned and/or flown by a Chuck Klusman. Think it was red/white at the time with race #11
