    Re: Not Everyone's a Fan of Jimi's

Thinking of the song "Toad", I MUST add Ginger Baker to the list of hot rock drummers.

Now, Jazz drummers is a whole different affair -- of the heart and soul! Right here in town is our very own John Von Ohlen -- he'd pass the "two sticks and a garbage can" test any day!

      Re: Not Everyone's a Fan of Jimi's

A guy in the band calls Buddy Rich's house looking for Buddy. A man answers and says, "I'm sorry but Buddy passed away last night."
The guy replies, "Ohhh, alright then."-click.

The next day he calls again and says "Hi. Is Buddy there?" Again the man says, "No, buddy has passed away."
      "Alright, thanks."-click.

The third day comes and and he calls again,"Yeah, is Buddy there?" The man is now a bit preturbed and says, "Look, I already told you, Buddy Rich is dead. What's your deal? Didn't you hear me the first two times?"
"Yeah, I heard you. I just like hearing it."-click.

Ah yes, Moon the Loon...always loved that bit of free form work just before Daltrey's scream on "Won't Get Fooled Again".

And let us not forget the late great John "Bonzo" Bonham. Think "Misty Mountain Hop" turned waaaayyy up...

Heh-heh. Unlike his (fictional?) bandmate, I certainly miss Mr. Rich.. He was the best of the best.

For those too young to be familiar with this VERY talented gentleman, check out this "drum battle" between Buddy and another extremely gifted drummer, Ed Shaughnessy (quicktime 7 required). Prepare to be blown away:

Of the best power drummers, Bonham was the man. For all around talented rock drummers, I pick Neil Peart of Rush. For the "Wildman of drums" catagory, Keith Moon has no equals. Just my opinions.

At the tender age of 33, I am too young. He had to of sold his soul to the Devil. Actually check that, I think he was the Devil. Just too damn mean to be God. As good a drummer as Vic is a photog.

                How about Vinnie Colaiuta?

ABSOLUTELY the greatest of all time. No one does what Vinnie does from Chacka Kahn to his work with the Buddy Rich orchestra.........and of course.....the great FZ.

I know i know, we wouldnt have Vinnie if we hadnt had Buddy! There, i said it and now respect has been paid. If you get a chance, check out the "Ziljian Day, Buddy Rich Memorial Foundation Concert" . Tape # 2 includes some rare Buddy solos and three drummers (Vinnie, Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl) paying homage to Buddy by playing individually along with Steve Marcus and crew then the grand finale, all three doing a drum trio solo.

                Anthony

.....that sounds like Vinnie Colaiuta playing drums.........
No....thats God he thinks he's Vinnie Colaiuta......

                  Re: Not Everyone's a Fan of Jimi's

Didn't FZ say that Vinnie was the best drummer he had soloed with? I think FZ mentioned a strange telepathy going on. I don't think it's a coincidence that most of the solos on Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar are with Vinnie (and to a smaller extent Terry B).

Oh, Steve Gadd. I remember FZ had a name for his style: "Quaalude Thunder." When conducting the band he would occasionally ask the drummer to provide that. Is he still pretty much a session guy? Great work in the jazz world with DiMeola and others (oh and Steely Dan work).

                    Re: Not Everyone's a Fan of Jimi's

First off, thanks for playing everyone! I'm getting all kinds of good stuff out of this. As a relatively young buck I was never exposed to this kind of stuff as a kid. I'm fortunate to have a friend in the biz who hooks me up with what little I have of that era. I'm of the opinion that there is way more good old stuff out there than there is good new stuff. Once again, thanks!

Now then, I'm hoping that I can contribute by brining up Stanton Moore. If you like the skins, you'll love him. His album All Kooked Out is nothing short of fantastic. However all of his work is fantastic, but that one really sticks out. Check out his site here.

Since Steely Dan was brought up, I got to sit at the very board that Aja was mixed on. Siting in that studio was something I'll never forget. Talk about recording history. It wasn't retired untill just a few years ago. That wonderfull rich sound out of it was just one of those wierd things that nobody could explain. Magic wiring? Nobody knows. Anyways, just curious if anybody knows what The Steely Dan actually was. This is a quiz not a question.

More specifically from William S. Burroughs' novel "Naked Lunch." IIRC the full name was "Steely Dan Mark III." FZ would use the term "lonely person device" during stage monologues (and there's the character Sy Borg of course).

Since Village Recorders was brought up (FZ recorded there too). Anyone enamored of the Dan should check out this DVD. Highly recommended:

Era, epoch? Huh...I remember the day that my older sister brought home the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" on a 45. (Yes, record!) It was SO cool, but she only played it twice that day. I had to go back and wait for it to come up again in the playlist on the AM (yes) rock radio station.

Hey, I ain't fartin' dust yet!
