The front canopy came off the pace plane #4 L-39 (painted in the Blue Angels theme) on the take off roll about mid field. They had enough runway left to abort along with two others that were starting to roll. Penney almost went through the debris. After they re-grouped, Penney took over as pace and they ran a 4 lap race due to low fuel. It was cool listening to Penney arrange the flight and bring them down with "gentlemen...you have a race!" He sounded like a pro.

It sure looked to me that #4 BARELY had enough runway to stop. I know the L-39s have good brakes but methinks the pucker factor was way up there.

Doesn't sound like this year gave the "jets don't suck" camp any more ammo. Another year of "Jets on Parade!"

I thought this was supposed to be a completely stock class! The announcers were talking about engine mods and airframe clean up mods on Penney's jet, and it showed! That wasn't a race, that was a joke!!!

ohh so that is what happened i must have missed it with all the comotion in section 3....i did notice they went around and restarted the take off roll with out #4
the only good jet photo is in wednesday photos

Guess there is no canopy unlock indicator in the Albatros to avoid loosing the hood..

Penney's jet was faster because there has been some mods done to the engine, and they've cleaned up the airframe a little! (I thought that it was supposed to be a stock class with close racing like the t-6 class, so what the hell gives???)
