It's just rubber baffle material for the cowl that got blown out.

2nd fastest average speed ever in a Gold win, there was nothing at all wrong with the motor.

Looks like a lot of torque, twisting things.

Given where that is, I'd guess that the torque of that monster 3350 is rotating the front cowl enough relative to the after cowl that it tweaked a piece of sheet metal. Then the air flow did the rest.

Just a SWAG. But I have repeatedly read that the fore/aft cowl twisting relative to each other is a problem on the roundies, including Bear, Dreadnought, and previous intake incarnations on 232 and Riff Raff (IIRC that's the other Sea Fury that tried a Skyraider-style intake).

If *I* were in Tiger's shoes, with my a** trying to pucker the naugahyde off the seat in the cockpit of my airplane behind my engine that I spent my money to put there, and then I felt a misfire and saw a puff while chasing 232 that hard and knowing that the Buick is back behind me just waiting.... I probably wouldn't risk shredding the engine, airplane, and myself to try to hold on to third at best.

Tiger's got the trophies... I'm not sure what some people think he has left to prove that would make it worth pushing till she blows big. If Strega hadn't given some sign that she was hurting, I'm pretty sure he'd have pushed her as hard as he could all the way to the end.

And by the way, Victor, those photos are AMAZING. Wow.

Let's be real, people. Strega is a much faster plane than 232, when she can make it to the finish. We noticed immediately when Tiger backed off around lap 3-4. When he got back to his pitbox with the Witch, he and the crew told us they were up to 110 inches MP, and she started vibrating. He backed off (as we saw from the stands) and tried to hang in there, but it wasn't gonna happen. The Witch said "no." They also told us an oil-coolant mix was coming out of the cylinder, and it left quite a stain on the cowl.
