Are the unlimited pilots hired or do they buy there way in given they have the proper credentials of course?
I ask this ? inlight of the current state of affairs with Rear Bear. While I had the unexpected pleasure of talking with John Penny in the paddock/pits Sunday afternoon after the races I did not think it was appropriate to ask him why he was not flying Rare Bear. Given the public knowledge of what caused "the flux capacitor" to malfunction, I was just wondering why the change in pilots. Is it money related or just something else which maybe none of our business. I know in automobile racing, it's not always the fastest guy that gets the seat but sometimes especially if your the number two man, it's all about the money! Of course you have to have the credentials but sometimes I wonder how certain people are allowed on the race course. What's up in air racing?
PS. This is my 4th year in a row attending the Reno Air Races. I attended college out here in the 70's and attended several races then. Before that I remember watching the race on Wide World Of Sports from my house in New Hampshire. This is a very special race...I wish the local Reno paper would treat it as such but that is another topic.
