    Did't Lacy bring the purple beast to Reno in the early eighties but did'nt qualify?
    No Clay had no intention of Qualifying at that race he just brought the racer up for a visit.

      Clay brought it to the 20th aniversary to Reno he flew it around the pylons but didnt race it Shawn

        I recall once in the 80's when that purple 'Stang made a low pass in front of the grandstands, side-by-side with a Learjet flying alongside off it's wingtip (the Mustang was closer to the stands).

        It was most likely 1983 or '84, since it was 1985 that I started camping out at the fenceline.

        I believe the pass occurred after the races/airshow was over for the day, but I can't be sure of that. We tended to stick around in the stands for an extra hour each day, watching for any post-race action (like test flights of repaired racers or departures of interesting aircraft).

        I have no idea whether Clay was piloting either the P-51 or the Lear, but it must have been quite a sight for the passengers in the jet.
