Re: V-12 MERLIN ROCKS
Yeah, get some exhaust stack for that ...damn. Sparrow, what were the main differences between the tank engine and the aircraft equivilent besides the tank motor not having a supercharger? Are there any common parst that can be used on a Merlin?

Re: V-12 MERLIN ROCKS
American tanks of World War II were powered by a wide variety of engines including the R975 and W670 radials.
These were used in various models of the M3 stewart, M3 Lee, and M4 Sherman tanks.
There were also other interesting radial derived models such as the Wright G-200 and Guiberson diesels.
Another engine that I find interesting is the Ford GAA.
This engine came from Ford's engine program that would have competed with the Merlin. (see pic)

Re: V-12 MERLIN ROCKS
I truly like this kind of thread!
I spent a lot of winters in the fleet shop where I worked for almost 20 years. Was up to my elbows (and a lot deeper) in grease much of that time and really liked the fabrication and engine work end of that line of work.
Engines are amazing pieces of work!
Now this Ford you're talkin' bout.. I'd like to know more and will have to do some research.
Seems like Ford made some pretty reliable (read that STRONG) engines over the years... An american competitor to the Merlin, other than the Allison, would have been an interesting machine!
I'm still a Chevy man, "less bearings, morepower!!" But both Ford and Chevy are about as 'Merican as you can get!

Re: V-12 MERLIN ROCKS
Back in the day....
Jocko up and buildt a full body mid- or rear eingne dragster ( like a fat bonneville lakster)then teamed up with Don Garlits... the marriage was short lived.
Powered with a tank engine back in the early sixties... it ran ok from what i remember.
What kind of motor , dont know .... was a huge v8 that was cut up from a bigger motor ... "The Jockos Porting Special"
