Mitchum sort of disappeared after that. Last I heard, the plane is still in storage in Colorado.

Bob Axtell who bought the plane from Mitchem told me back in 92 that Mitchem and wife committed suicide shortly after Axtell got the a/c. Apparently they were both terminally ill, and in the days/weeks afterwards familymembers started receiving family heirlooms, juvelry, etc. in the mail. Seems they had it all figured out.

I told Randy lsat night that the checkers might have looked better on the nose and a GOTCHA type font 99 on the tail.

Hey, I know that Corsair! I gave it a once-over with a dust mop when the wife and I were volunteers at WotR! (It left me wondering how pilots mount and dismount the ac without gum-sole boots, the wings' angle at rest is so steep.)

When I was at the museum about two years ago I was told the aircraft was for sale. They must be asking waaaaaaaaay too much for it to have not sold it by now.

I too was at the Wings Over The Rockies Museum a couple of years back....maybe longer than that? But when I was taking pictures of #94 a volunteer came up and we started chatting about the plane. I recall that the volunteer told me it was for sale for $2 million.
I took some detail pics of the wing tips and tail cone and such. I can post them here.

Apologies for the zombie thread but I felt obliged!

Imagine if Pat Palmer (one eye) would have ever gotten his #99 big-engine Corsair built.

That airframe sat around in Pat and Jim's hangar for many years after they got out of the T-6 business. Eventually, Jim restored it as "Big Hog". After Jim died in a parachuting accident, the plane got passed around. It was in Europe the last time I heard anything about it. But if you ever looked at it up close, it was the slickest airframe you EVER SAW. I mean it was flush rivited and filled s-m-o-o-t-h. Fastest 'stock' warbird you'll ever see!

She survives in ostensibly airworthy condition (sadly chained down in a hangar due to a court case, last flown around 2017) here in New Zealand. And further to what speeddemon said, when displayed at airshows by Keith Skilling she really motored!! Some videos are online but they don't capture what it was like in person.

The Big Hummer Corsair was sold many years ago and restored to stock configuration. Now flies as N194G based in Illinois.
