Posts made past 02:30PM 12/30/24 won't be on the new site!

We are in the final stages of resolving the issues with the forums move to the new location. After talking with tech support, the only solution was to send him a copy of all the images. This will take time - but we know the fix SO it's only a matter of time now.

Thanks again for your patience,

The Signal Sea Fury wasn't there that year (Carroll had been killed a month earlier in Cobra III). E.D.'s planes had been repainted yellow & black checkerboard, and Loening's plane had been repainted black, white, and red.

Gads, I am SUCH a nerd!!!!!!

And that's why I couldn't go with 68. I know Loenings aircraft had a different paint job in 68 and named "Chance III" I believe. As for the #19, now I'll have to pull some 300 slides out for that.

According to the RARA database Allender only entered in one Reno race. That was 1973 and the plane was his all red second P-51D, having sold "Wayfarer's Club Lady" around 1966-67. If he was not entered, why was the plane out on the flightline? Also, who's plain metal 51 is in the background of Sherm Cooper's Mustang. Or the one on the left?

My guess is that the polished metal plane is Doug Wood's Mustang. I think it ran in the Transcon that year.

As far as why Allender's plane is sitting on the ramp, well...back in the early days there were a LOT of planes that showed up at Stead for the races but didn't 'enter'. Maybe he just showed up to watch? I think Allender only raced #19 at the two Lancaster races.

Back in the late 70's and 80's, there was no static area as old timers know, and a lot of neat stuff used to fly in and park amongst the pit area.
It was a real treat to walk around and see planes you would'nt see fly at the event. A lot of after hours flying went on also.

Sully, with your permission, I'm going to copy those photos of the Bardahl Special and send them to my buddy Chuck.

I know EXACTLY what his reaction is going to be too....he's gonna get this big wide grin, then he's gonna chuckle a bit to himself, and then he'll say something like "Yeah....that was a doozie", followed by a complete explanation.

                        Great stuff.
