What I remember about the incident was the lenght of the flames, the terror when we all realized that the plane was doomed and Kevin needed to get out, the huge relief when we saw that chute and then the gut wrenching sadness as we watched the pilotless plane plunge to it's doom.

Well said, Michele.
I was there, too and I remember it well. I was standing in the pit area, with another "Reno-regular" (R.I.P. Andy - you're not forgotten) and observed the entire incident. We began to chant, "Get out, get out, get out" and I noticed that most folks near us were saying the same. But (also) about that time, a gentleman standing near me said something like, "He can't do that." I said, "Why do you think they have chutes?" About a second later, the parachute canopy blossomed.
It did appear to me that Kevin glanced off the tail first though and I believe that was the case, nonetheless I was totally jazzed that he would survive. Also, IIRC, it seemed to take a long time for aid to arrive at his side.
I was there also. I was only 16 but I remember it very vividly. I remember the panic and terror watching the flames come out of the plane, not knowing if Kevin could get out. My dad, uncle and I watched the whole thing and it shook us up so bad, I don't think any of us said a word until the next morining. I heard he broke his leg on the tail on his way out.
That's a negative Ghostrider, the pattern is full...
