                    WHAT?????

You shouldn't talk about Hacker that way.

I think you'll find the term 'ramp nazi's' is something that is well-permeated throughout the Reno die-hards....because, that is pretty much what they were. You yourself admitted that the power went to their heads, and yup...it did...in some extreme cases I saw it to the point where they would harass spectators, 'force' them to pull their toe two inches back over the line, berate them in front of everyone else around them, and then go over to their other cop buddies and laugh about it. Perhaps you should ask John Putnam and Wiley Sanders what THEY think of the boys in blue from Reno PD. I think the nickname was well-earned.

                    A pr*ck is a pr*ck is a pr*ck....no matter how you wrap it up.

But it certainly was never intended to be a jab at law enforcement in general.

                      Speeddeamon,
You are entirely correct. However in my experience those who acted that way didn't last very long. Their ego got them fired, but they were H e double toothpicks to deal with or associate with until that happened.
I totally agree with 95% of what has been said on this thread and I understand where the term "RAMP NAZI" comes from, but I still don'd care from the term.
I would have gladly returned to my cave and 'chilled out' but my mat was taken!!!!
I still find ALL of you very informative, and I wouldn't miss checking on to the webb site daily. It is very informative and entlighting, and I will still come to Reno in September.

                        Well.....okay...... :-)

But you'll have to wear your reflective sun glasses when you come by the Warlock pit for a cool refreshing beverege. That way we'll know how to recognize you.

*Oh, and before I forget...I work in law enforcement too, so I see both sides of it...good and bad.*

Well, all folks who have positions of power, be they managers in the company you work for, politicians, the head of your condo association, et al... ALL positions of this sort carry with them the responsiblity of keeping one's self centered and not allowing the position to "go to your head".. we've all met folks who are either really good at this or, unfortunately, at times, really bad at it..

"Small town cops" can, at times, be the worst offenders of this "abuse of power" syndrome!

On that subject.. y'all should have lived in Reno and been a teenager in the 60's!!!!!!!!!

Under former chief Elmer Briscoe, the RPD was one of the toughest PD's in the nation! Rights? You ain't got no rights boy!

When I was a kid, it didn't matter IF you did anything. The RPD had a habit of just picking you up, saying you did something you didn't do, dropping you off at the "juvie" center and then you just had to go through the process of waiting to be picked up by your (now) very angry parents..

Your parents were either angry at you, or, if they believed you, they became angry at the RPD for the situation.

In my case, my dad went to ol' Elmer and told him.. "if he does something, you have my permission to fry his ass, but you better be damn sure he did it because if you keep running him in for nothing, I'll fry your ass"....

Since we who were under 18 were only in the RPD's control until they processed us out to the "juvie" hall until we were 18 years of age, so they had "limited" time with us in with which to have "fun"... Someone within the PD who was a friend of my mom informed her that the word was... once that SOB turns 18... his life is gonna change..

Needless to say, I moved out of Reno at 17 and did not come back till MANY years later!

FORTUNATELY, abuses such as were in effect at Reno during the "Briscoe era" are not nearly as common across the US today (trust me, you hadda have been a kid or, black during that era to understand)

UNFORTUNATELY, as things do, the momentum has swung the other way and nowdays, it's entirely too hard for law enforcement to do what they need to do in the area of intimidation of the bad guys..

In the end, it all comes back to that balance thing. Had there not been so many abuses of power in the "old days" we'd not see so many legal hands tied today.

Ahh.... balance.. such a little used place in our minds..

Re: Motorcycle cops of twenty years ago...

I worked as an event security supervisor for several years at a California race track.
I can sympathise a little with the cops, we had to get a little hard as* sometimes to get our point across and keep control. That toe across the line soon becomes a foot, then a leg, and before you know it you have a hundred people out on the ramp. There is always someone who "knows how to be safe" so should be let thru a safety line, always someone who "knows someone" and should get in where they do not belong. The worst, I hate to say, were the few drunk NASCAR fans (and I am one) that ended up fighting us to do something stupid.
On the other side of that there were the idiots that put on a hat, shirt and headset and became Robocops. It's simply not needed and harassing and abusing the spectators is just plain mean. As stated above, they did'nt last long. Usually did'nt finish the day.
As a spectator at the races for many years I've tried all the tricks to do things I was'nt supposed to. Gotten in trouble a few times. Deserved it every time. It's all part of the game.
