I'm going to down a case of molson and watch some hockey in tribute. support your local airshow pilot. Without people watching they would starve. This september when you see a snowbird just say thanks for a great show ,thanks for your military (the only canadians its seems that care about the usa) and I appreicate the danger you face everyday from performing in a show with eight friends in extremly close conditions with hundreds of thousands of people watching on any giving weekend in everychanging conditions to the pressure of always keeping your bearing with the public who ask the same silly questions every week.
Let mee see ( Wayne may I help a bit ? )..all three latest demo pilot accidents:
1. F-16 down..cause altitude set wrong for a low split-S.
2. F-18 down..cause ( still under investigation ) low level G-LOC assumed.
3. Tudor down...wing folds at low altitude.
My piece of advise is 300 feet more altitude for all low level maneuvers.
Some years back I saw F-5 practising / doing a low level banked at 90 degrees and flying on rudder to control the altitude..the plane came to about 15 feet when the rudder trim broke before the pilot could correct the situation.
Immediately after this the AF base chief commanded at least 300 feet minimum altitude for the stunt ( in fact for all aerial maneuvers for the coming show )...it looked slightly lame, but after that 15 feet " near touch down " I felt it as OK !
So hard deck for aerial shows into 600-900 feet. That would have given all those three cases lot more time to recover.
