Ultimately, after spending most of my life involved with this stuff, I have come to the realization they are just chunks of metal, it is the people that make it happen, the pilots, owners, mechanics can't be replaced. Another fine warbird? Just a data plate that artisists and magicians have to congregate around long enough to give the effect that plane is still there, that fine warbird is gone my friend, it may be recreated but it is gone or was it gone before?

" I returned to see under to sun that the swift do not have the race, nor the mighty ones the battle, nor do the wise also have the food, nor do the understanding ones also have the riches, nor do those having knowledge have the favor; because time and unforseen occurrence befall them all" Ecclesiastes 9:11

      My condolences to all involved.

          Re: Lou IV Crash

John, Thank you so much for so elequently speaking to this issue..

In the past when "these things" happen, I've most often pulled the thread or buried it because I simply hate to think that involved and grieving parties would read something here that would cause them pain on top of the pain they are already feeling...

As I've always said when an accident happens, please, keep speculation to yourselves, or over a beer in the dark corners of your favorite hangout.. or amongst your peer group. It's all too easy to "armchair" things like this to infinity... I'm not going to say that discussing mishaps is not a good thing, if someone else is saved by knowledge gained from this or other incidents, that is a good thing.. The "argument" I always make is.. "venue"... I'm not sure this is the right one for such discussions.

Words, when spoken, are merely modulated warm air, lost to eternity as soon as uttered. They will become simply a part of memory of those who spoke them and those close enough to hear them. Words when typed and published.. in our modern era, are something which in an instant, become part of 1000's of people's lives.. They are there to haunt the reader as many times as that reader sees them.

How much pain might something like that bring someone close to the person no longer with us who is searching for some firm piece of ground to explain the unexplainable "WHY" question...

Please keep that thought in mind when addressing sensitive subjects as this, at least until those closely involved can come to grips with their own personal realites...

          Thanks!

It is about the people, and there are lots of us still here after incidents like this. I did not know the pilot involved in this incident. I do know a Pilot that made quite a few dead stick landings in a very public venue, and everyone of them had my mothers nerves wrapped in a ball. It is about the people.

                Re: Lou IV Crash

As "Someone" who knew the pilot... I can say that this has been a nice forum to come to and hear the "Guys/Gals" in the community offer many nice thoughts on the subject and condolences to the friends and family who knew and loved John. They would know that this "community" wraps their arms around them to comfort them.

I feel a lot of pain for the instructor as well who had to get to know John well enough to understand how well he knew what he was doing in his Mustang training. I am sure a new friendship had begun there. The "Instructor" is also a very strong friend of this family and "we" know that he is Very Good at what he does or John would not have doing his instruction with him. I hope his pain subsides over time and he continues doing what he does very well. He is part of an elite few who put " new " warbird pilots in these airplanes to keep them being flown by the next generation regardless of what happens with the Reno venue over time.

                Thanks Guys/Gals

<<<...was doing his 1st solo in the plane. The CFI was there and witnessed the accident.>>>

I used to have nightmares about this.
My heart aches for Mr. Instructor.

I know this post is from years back, but have been researching "Lou IV" as I had recently uploaded to YouTube an old 8mm of an airshow from my much younger days. This airshow was the 1967 Erie Airshow held at Erie, PA. Lou IV was there, and the aircraft may be seen at 58 seconds into the video. Hope this isn't misinterpreted as spam, but here's a link to the video.

FWIW, not the same aircraft as in the original thread this post is appended to.

How many Mustangs have worn the name Lou IV? We jokingly referred to the one at Reno this year as Lou IV the 7th.

                                De Camera,
Bob Hoover! Is that him and his Mustang from 2:00 to 2:23? Was impressed as a kid how he could fly the aircraft on one wheel down the runway. But it wasn't a yellow Mustang. Did he have another in 1967? I'd like to annotate the video with his name if that was truly him.
