      Hi David,

Yours is kind of an apples to oranges comparison. When Dago went for the 500 lap in 2000, that was right after a race with a hot engine. That was a unique circumstance.

Dago's 500+ mph race was at a race power, but not what they would call high race power. The airplane flew that entire week, and flew home.

Any race engine run that hard gets some wear and tear; but nobody knows when the wick will run out.

As it pertains to Brown and his airplane; expect the same attitude as past years... He wants to win.

And the comment about second place setting the pace of the race. Couldn't be more accurate.

Re: Out On A Limb - Reno 2007 Precictions

Isn't anybody gonna list- 'GALLOPING GHOST' as a factor in the Reno 2007 NCAR Unlimited contenders??? (She's on the entry list - assuming her race prep will be completed in time to make the arrival deadline...)

Sept. Fury is no-doubt the odds-on favorite for the Gold. Bear & Ghost are dark horses jammin' to get finished in time. I've been really impressed with Stu Dawson's SPIRIT OF TEXAS' steady progress thru the Unlimited Gold ranks each year (this hard-workin', dedicated team comes to- RACE!!!).

History has often proved that many of those 'spotty field' years at Reno for the Unlimited Class (when alot of the Gold Class heavies are standing down), provide some unexpected surprises and very competitive racing.

It will be interesting, to say the least.

          1) September fury

          2) Dreadnought

          3) Spirit of Texas

I don't see any Mustangs breaking the Dreadnought curse this year.

September Fury will set the quali record over 500, then only use what is needed to stay in front.
If the Bear is up and strong, it could be a heck of a race, but I think SF will prevail.

Like shawn said, in 1976 the field was small to start with, and there was lots of attrition to boot. Some of the aircraft didn't even make it to Reno, having troubles enroute. There were some great aircraft that did make it, only to end up sitting on the ramp. And who won? Lefty Gardner in his somewhat "stock" P-51 "Thunderbird". Check out the diversity of the field though: Two Kingcobras, an Aircobra, a Tigercat, two P-38's, the RB-51, and even an Me-109! (even though it never arrived) You just never know what's going to happen...... (There's some great names on this list, guys who are sorely missed.......Blue skies gentlemen!)

To all of you picking September Fury, are you assuming the bear wont be racing? If not ( Spe fury beating a healthy bear) ARE YOU CRAZY???!!!

NO sea fury can beat a healthy Bear. Its simple phsyics!

Re: Out On A Limb - Reno 2007 Precictions

I'm a Bear fan, BUT I still think that with what has been done to Sept Fury the last few years she is faster. The Fury airframe may be larger but it was the last of the piston fighters and has better aerodynamics than the Bearcat. SF has a strong engine, a good crew (not in any way disparaging the Bear gang).
Now IF the Bear is running strong, and IF she can push SF to the breaking point before she detonates herself, then... It would be one heck of a good race until one of them blows.

All theories of aerodynamics are based upon physics, hence it's label as a "building-block" of science. But as you said, who's counting?

In regards to a sea fury being more aerodynamic then a bearcat???

Were sea fury fusalage's dropped from the sky to provide the design with the least resitance (wasn't the wind tunnel a great invention?) Has anyone set a speed record with a sea fury? Has this forum been invaded by the british?

I dont think that the bear will need to push the new motor very hard at all to out pace september fury, but if that Sep Fury is faster then I give credit for I will only be more pleased. I'm in it for the competition!

But seriously guys, do you remember the Bear?? It's REALLY fast.
