It has been pointed out by certain people that my 'know it all' attitude gets tiresome, and I hope it doesn't come across this way
Only to those, unwilling to seek the path to TRUE geekdom. You are the torch bearer on this journey, and we are greatful for the enlightenment.
Thank you, O-speed-one.
Anson Johnson's race 45 was N13Y. If you follow this link, http://farm1.static.flickr.com/245/4...dd5283.jpg?v=0 the number is clear as day. I think Lefty's P38 came about after race 45 was undone. (For lack of a better way to put it since I don't know the planes real fate.)

Lefty's P-38 was N25Y clear back in 1947 when it was J.D. Reed's Sky Ranger, #14....a year before Johnson won with Race 45.
Congrats to the GG crew for making the effort to make this years event!!! With a year to go to Reno 08, GG should be ready to demonstrate to those round motors that the MERLIN is back!!!!
Thanks for posting the pics of Crockers canopy WINGMAN. Just curious, but who is the gentleman with the British flag on his helmet? Sanders? I recognize Hovey and Rick Brickert?
Since there seems to be some interest in canopies right now, I did a couple of quick and dirty scans of the Sumthin Else canopy. As you can see it did have a stop that allowed it to open a couple of inches while taxiing, but nothing on the airplane to hold it in place when fully open -- there was a fitted piece of wood with the ground crew for this purpose.
I always loved the look of this canopy -- I really think it's the prettiest race canopy ever made. Very sexy curves, for a piece of metal and plexiglass...

Yes indeed -- It was at a Chino show in the mid 80s. Very cool -- all sorts of people switching airplanes. I remember Crocker in a Corsair and in Wally McDonnell's Sea Fury, with Lloyd checking him out as John had never flown a Sea Fury before...
Oh Carp... when reading the digest I get, I didn't get the link and did not see the story, so I missed the standing down part..
All things considered, probably the only safe and sane thing to do. Had to be hard for Jimmy, who just may be one of the most competitive (and equally nice) people in the sport!
I still say we throw JIMMY a smoke oil party this year.. he sure did it for us last year...
Imagine the vats we could create if we all brought a bottle!
Three cheers for Jimmy Leeward and his racing efforts!!
I agree that 's a nice looking canopy, but it just seems that it should roll back like Dago Red, Strega, and Voodoo... I would think if you had a issue with smoke in the cockpit it would be nice (and less expensive by not having to replace the whole canopy) if you could just crank it back instead of releasing it completely... Just my .02 ...
