Look at the 'rudder techniques' of Jim Orton and Bob Love.......one's in a slip, one's in a skid.....and Skip is jes' a-flyin away (musta been Gueniveiree in the back seat).

But I do have to say, there was a LOT of experience in that photo. Three of the best pilots to ever strap into a P-51. A shame that Orton never got a chance to show just 'how good' he was.

They are made larger.
The outlet of the stack is often plugged on the ground with a tennis ball with the race stacks. Which makes for interesting times on the ramp when it is started with them still in place.
They are custom made, either completely new build or modified from originals. Being larger they flow more gas.
I will have to measure them and compare to the stock for exact sizes.

The stock stack is about 1 7/8" ID.
The race stacks Bald Eagle used were modified from stock. They are not quite round on the outlet and the ID varies from 2 1/8 to 2 3/8".
A tennis ball is about 2 1/2" in dia.
My iphoto all of a sudden won't stop quitting on me. If I can resize a few photos of a stock and racer stack side by side I will post them.

Rich, this is facinating stuff.. Question comes to mind on stacks versus a "tuned" header system..

I probably know just enough to make me annoying so, please bear with me.. Is there potential in making more horsepower using a tuned "extractor" type system over the tiny stack systems?

I've always wondered this, partly because even on the high HP dragsters, they have somewhat of a "pipe" on them..

My sincere thanks for sharing here! You're giving us a look inside that is absolutely RARE!

The original stacks are designed to act as a nozzle to create some thrust from the exhaust gases. It does create some net power as such.
The racing stacks are larger on the outlet to let the engine breathe. By running the engine at higher than normal power you are cramming more air and fuel into it. You are creating more exhaust gases so by enlarging the exit you don't dam up the flow.
By design a tuned exhaust has pipes that are the same length and cut to a length that best suits a particular engine power out put.
On a Mustang it would dam up the exhaust to some degree. There isn't really any space to put so it would add a drag penalty airflow wise. At what power setting would you want it tuned to? That adds a bunch of issues there.
The best way to make more power as Dwight Thorn splained to me is to keep shoveling in air and fuel and beef it up to make it last.

Daddy Beasley (Jim) raced #23 Bald Eagle at Reno '83 and Moose Jaw '84. Skip raced #68 Shangri La at Reno '82 (and even though the same plane ran as #97 The Believer and was physically AT Reno '94, she never raced in that configuration.

Not sure about the T-6. But then, it's ONLY a T-6, so it really isn't important anyhow.... (ducking).

Brad, I'll remember your comment when were allotting the media rides, hey its only a T6 so this photo flight is unimportant. Since T-6 racing is just ho hum, I guess when us yawners take the course you can go hit the sani-hut, or have a beer and a brat in the shade. I guess the ground crew should just take turns riding in the pace backseat, we will just swap out every other race this year. Heck, we all have cameras and we know anybody can report and take pictures.

Nothing like a boomerang to get those who run and duck around corners or behind the sofa, your turn speedy

Brad's ace in the hole......I KNOW YOUR WIFE! She'll never let you get away treating me like this!!! :-) Besides, it seems every time I stick my head in your pit, the common response is "Warren WHO???" On the off-hand chance that someone might actually KNOW who you are, the answer is usually that you're off snooping in someone elses pit.

Not to worry -- Brad's too big to fit back there anyway! Now Birgitta is only 130 pounds, has lots of pace plane experience, straps herself in without thinking about it, and the pilot never even notices she's there!
