    Re: griffin versus merlin

Surfing the web last night I found two custom piston makers that said the largest they made was 6.150 inches. Billet connecting rods can be made on a Bridgeport. Crankshafts from 4130 are racing standard and yes the can do Merlin sized cranks. Any custom parts makes the whole plane Experimental but that hardly matters. Soon custom parts will be cheaper than untra rare surplus

          Re: griffin versus merlin

Can they do forgings too? I believe maching/grinding forged cranks and connecting rod blanks are supposed result in much stronger parts than those machined from large solid billets.

Actually billet cranks and rods are the strongest made short of titanium. Billets of 4130 are forged and tough as can be.

griffon versus merlin my .02 cents....

I think one other drawback to the Griffon is the fact that it came so late in the war that it really didn't have the R & D thrown at it that the Merlin had. Jets were the new thing so "piston powered propeller driven" was well on its way out from the middle to the end of WW II.
That being said, there is nothing finer than the growl of a Griffon when its mad!
